Elias Saion is a Professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). He obtained a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1975. He joined UPM in 1976 and went to pursue his MSc at University of Survey in 1978. He obtained his PhD degree from University of St Andrews, UK in 1989. Professor Elias leads the fundamental and applied researches in ionizing radiation and nanoscience at the Department of Physics, UPM. His major research areas include the radiation synthesis of conducting polymers, ionic electrolytes, metal nanoparticles, semiconductor quantum dots, and nanocrystals and the diagnostic medical physics and quantum computing of nanostructures. He is the pioneer in the radiation synthesis of conducting polymers and the quantum mechanical calculations of the optical absorption spectra of metal nanoparticles. The calculation successfully describes quantum mechanically the electronic structures of the conduction electrons of metallic nanoparticles, with otherwise were based on the classical electrodynamic description of the Mie’s theory. He received many research grants including Science Fund Research Grant (Ministry of Science and Innovation of Malaysia (MOSTI), Research University Grant Scheme (RUGS) and Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS).
