MIICEMA 2017 Introduction

Challenges facing both by Indonesia and Malaysia countries to achieve an inclusive and sustainable economic growth are still profound. According to the Inclusive Development Index (IDI) Indonesia and Malaysia have relatively high IDI scores namely 4.29 and 4.39 respectively due to labor productivity growth and poverty reduction. However the conditions of income and wealth inequality are considerably concerning. Achievements in human development are reflected by a good quality of education systems and basic infrastructures. Specific challenges on gender balance participation remains in the Indonesian workforce also emerged, while reliable access to financial resources, helping boost business development and entrepreneurship (World Economic Forum, 2017). In addition to above problems, economic growth also happens at the expense of environmental and natural resource degradation and depletion.

This condition raises a question on how sustain and inclusive does our economy to support the people’s living. A global framework, Sustainable Development Goals, has been established to become the primary reference for countries in the world for balancing economic, social and environmental goals. How effective are policies implemented in Indonesia in achieving the SDGs and what can be done in the future to achieve these goals? These questions motivate us to organize MIICEMA with the title of “Towards Economic Stability and Sustainability: Economics, Management, and Accounting Perspective”. We aim at providing some recommendations for economic development in Indonesia and Malaysia in the frame of SDGs.
