UKM

Universiti Kebangsaan (National University of) Malaysia (UKM) is a public university located in Bangi, about 35 km south of Kuala Lumpur. It is one of five research universities in the country. UKM is ranked 20th place in the QS Top 50 Under 50, a ranking of the world’s top 50 universities established within the last 50 years, based on the highest performing young institutions in the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings 2014/15. It is ranked 2nd in Southeast Asia on the same list.

Established in May 1970, UKM today has expanded to 13 well-established faculties, 13 institutes and 18 centres. It has about 2,350 academic staff and approximately 24,000 students. Its vibrant campuses in Bangi and Kuala Lumpur support a richly multicultural student community made up of over 13,000 undergraduate students and 11,000 postgraduate students, including nearly 2,500 foreign students from around 35 countries. Since its establishment, the university has produced more than 156,000 graduates at different levels.

After 45 years in existence, UKM has continuously intensified efforts in its agenda of research in 12 niche areas. The main goal of its Transformation Programme is to place UKM in the community of leading research universities by 2018. It aims to enhance its level of excellence via its 2000-2020 Strategic Plan (PS2020) in line with its slogan “Inspiring Futures, Nurturing Possibilities”. In this era of globalisation, UKM aspires to further internationalise its profile and presence through staff and student exchanges as well as research and professional network activities, crystallising the theme “the national university with an international reach”.
