Microscopes are instruments that are used in science laboratories to visualize very minute objects, such as cells and microorganisms, giving a contrasting image that is magnified. Microscopes are made up of lenses for magnification, each with its magnification powers. Depending on the type of lens, it will magnify the specimen according to its focal strength. Their ability to function is because they have been constructed with special components that enable them to achieve high magnification levels. They can view very small specimens and distinguish their structural differences, for example, the view of animal and plant cells viewing microscopic bacterial cells.

Fume Hood
Status: Available
Fume hood represent the primary line of defense for personnel against exposure to harmful, toxic, and dangerous fumes or chemicals as they are produced. A fume hood is an enclosure that safely contains and ventilates hazardous fumes, vapors, gasses, and dust generated by chemical processes performed in the fume hood. Sometimes called a chemical hood or a lab hood, a fume hood protects workers from inhalation of hazardous substances. The clear sliding window on a fume hood called the sash, also shields workers from spills and splashes that may occur in the chemical fume hood. Fume hoods are the workhorse of laboratory exhaust systems and are the most widely used approach for local ventilation.

Freeze Dryer
Status: Available
Freeze drying (Lyophilisation) is the technique of preservation in which water is frozen and then converted directly to vapor by sublimation. It combines two preservation methods; freezing and dehydration by sublimation. It is different from other techniques as frozen water moves from ice state to vapor without becoming liquid. Rehydration is very rapid and complete as compared to other drying processes. Herbs, spices, enzymes, microbial cultures, etc., are preserved by freeze-drying.

Hot Plate & Stirrer
Status: Available
Hot plates are used in a laboratory as a heat source that can uniformly heat solutions and materials. They are considered much safer than traditional Bunsen burners because there is no open flame involved, just a heated plate. A magnetic stirrer is an essential piece of equipment for most laboratories. Certain procedures require a solution to be agitated for it to be effectively dissolved. This can be for ensuring a homogenous mixing of samples before analysis, combining a variety of chemicals into a solution, getting solid materials to dissolve in a liquid solution, and meeting a variable rotating speed required in a preparatory method. A hot plate & stirrer is a hot plate with a bonus, it has a magnetic inside of it. The magnet can be rotated at varying speeds which will create a magnetic field around the hot plate. Paired with a magnetic stir bar, your solution can be heated and mixed at the same time.

Specification:

Max. plate temp. °C >450
Temp. Control °C ±5°C
Stirrer speed (rpm)= 0-2000
Plate dimensions (mm) = 210x210
Heated area (mm) = 150x150

Rotary Microtome
Status: Available
A microtome is a specialized precision cutting instrument, which accurately and repeatedly slices sections from a block of embedded tissue. Different kinds of microtomes are used to section paraffin and plastic-embedded tissues. A microtome is also used to make thin slices of tissue (usually 4 μm but can be 2–10 μm). By far the most common type, rotary microtomes are used to section paraffin-embedded tissue samples within the range of 0.5µm to 60µm. These machines are quite simple, consisting of just a weighted handwheel, sample chuck, and blade assembly. Microtomy is performed by spinning the handwheel clockwise; with each revolution, the sample advances to the blade has a layer sectioned, and retracts on the upward stroke to prevent it from rubbing against the side of the blade and being damaged.

Specification:

Section thickness setting: 1 – 60um from 1 -10um in 1um steps, from 10 – 20um in 2um steps from 20 – 60um in 5um steps
Section thickness indication: visual display
Coarse Fee: manual, via coarse feed wheel
Horizontal specimen feed: approx. 30mm (-10%)
Vertical specimen stroke length:
Max. sectioning area without retraction: 69 mm without specimen orientation 1 um
Max. sectioning area with retraction: 62 mm
Specimen retraction: 200um

Phase Contrast Microscope is an optical microscope that converts small phase shifts in light into differences in light intensity developing more contrast in images that can be easily detected by human eyes. When light passes through transparent specimens a small phase shift occurs which can’t be detected by our eyes. Using phase plates, these small phase shifts are converted to changes in the amplitude of light. This change in amplitude can be observed as differences in image contrast. It can be used for observing living cells in their natural state without staining or fixing. Transparent specimens and subcellular organelles can be viewed with better contrast. Due to the difference in thickness and refractive index of different parts of a specimen, a small phase shift in light rays occurs when the light passes through the specimens. This phase shift can be changed into differences in light intensity (brightness) which will produce more contrast in the image.
