In 2012, PROTON in collaboration with Malaysia Innovation Agency (AIM) has organised “Proton Green Mobility Challenge 2012” or PGMC 2012. This inaugural competition will be accompanied with a strategy partner consisting of MOSTI, Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (Green Tech Corp), an agency under KeTTHA, Malaysia Automotive Institute, an agency under MITI and the International Society of Automotive Engineers, Malaysia (SAE International, Malaysia). The competition aims is to provide engineers for the future development of green technologies for automotive industry in Malaysia through three parties cooperation which are from Private, Government and Higher Education Institutions. The main objectives of the competition are:
• To bring in the spirit amongst researchers community in green technology in the Higher Learning Institutions;
• To promote green technology in line with the Nation green technology strategy;
• To inform the public about the future direction of PROTON as worldwide car manufacturer of Hybrid/EV.
The 10 selected participating teams from UTP , UNITEN, UTM, UTeM, UKM, IIUM, UNIKL MSI, UNIMAP, UMP, UNISEL will have to put into practice their innovativeness in terms of EV development and strategy, battery management, electric motor control technology and thermal management. The teams will research and work for about 9 months on a project focusing on the energy saving technology and strategies. The overall winner will receive a RM50,000 research grant, an internship with PROTON and a chance to compete on the global stage.
Hence, there is great confidence among UKM staff to continue upgrading their capabilities while enhancing their talents in a conducive, healthy and supportive environment as provided by the university Current developments in the Green Mobility research fall under one or two of our niche areas. It gives great pride to the team, through the Centre for Automotive Research (CAR) that we are able to contribute to increase the university level of excellence through our success in the challenge. The team called the I.C.E (Internal Combustion Engine) Terminator is made of researchers, technicians and students from Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (FKAB) UKM. Within the faculty, this competition is spearheaded by CAR. The team represents Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, one of the four research universities of Malaysia in 2006 based on it’s excellent record in research for 40 years. In line with UKM slogan, ‘Inspiring Hopes, Nurturing The Future’, the university is fully committed to continually enhance its level of excellence through the eight niche research areas; Challenges to Nation Building, Sustainable Territorial Development, Renewable Energy, Health and Medical Technology, Climate Change, Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, Biological Diversity in Biotechnology Development and ICT: Content Informatics.
