This is the first eco challenge held in Malaysia organised by Shell Malaysia and Shell Global, namely Shell Eco-Marathon Asia (SEM). This year Malaysia become a host for the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2010 held at the Sepang International Circuit. The participation is open to all institutions throughout Asia. In this SEM challenges, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has sent three teams, there are UKM Fuel Cell Car, UKM Solar Car and UKM LPG Car in the prototype category. All cars were designed and developed by engineering students from various departments in six months only. Each team spent a lot of time for simulation, accurate and complete engine tuning/systems for preparation in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia. However, all the hard work worth it because the team UKM LPG Car emerged as the winner in the prototype alternative gasoline (LPG) category. UKM team not only won in that category they compete, but they also bust the tournament record with a 479.5 km ride. The Eco-marathon competition not only challenged students to design, build and drive the fastest car but to travel for long distances by using minimum of fuel/energy. The participating teams also need to get a source for sponsorship, design and build a prototype from the beginning of the race. The prototypes would then be inspected by technical teams from Shell so that they meet the required designs, specifications and measurements so that no team would gain any extra advantages over others, and then will be allowed to race on the circuit.

For participation in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia (SEM) 2011, UKM team has sent two teams/vehicles, namely solar and fuel cells in the prototype category. In this challenge we had developed extremely new car design based on water droplets concept in order to achieve a better aerodynamic profile. With the good aerodynamic design, it can make the car optimise the use of energy and fuel. Both car bodies are made from carbon fibre composite that makes the car stronger and lighter than other materials. In term of frame for front/rear wheel system, it was made from aluminum alloy with more strength and lightest. In addition, the system for both cars also has been tuned properly for optimum performance during the race.

In SEM 2012 challenges, the teams UKM attempt the chance in the category of urban concept solar, and prototype fuel cell and solar. For the prototype fuel cell, it still uses the same body as last year, but with a little modification done on the upper bodies, which are on the front area to expand the view, and side area for better wind flow in order to cool the fuel cell system. For prototype ethanol it will be using the prototype solar body last year. However, the platform of the car need to be modified to accommodate with a small engine to replace the solar system. For an urban solar car, it developed from the early stages which are chassis made from aluminum alloy that is strong and lightweight, while the outer body is made of polycarbonate to reduce the overall weight of the car. The ethanol engine, solar and fuel cell systems were tuned intensely to optimize the energy consumption and thus provide further travel distance.

In the fourth challenge of SEM (2013), it should be held in Malaysia but has been cancelled due to the haze that hit our country. Therefore, the next SEM challenges continued in Manila in year 2014. At this participation, UKM team have decided to participate in the urban concept-ethanol and prototype fuel cell challenges. At this time, the urban concept ethanol car was modified from urban solar car which has been used last year. The new car body have been made by using fibre composite, and some modification on rear chassis for engine mounting. Mechanical systems such as brakes, steering system and the others part are maintained, and with a few improvements have been made to give the best performance in term of power and fuel consumption. For fuel cell cars, it also have been improvements in terms of system and design in order to provide the best performance during the race.
