About CIS

Centre for Insect Systematics (CIS) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is one of its kind in Southeast Asia. CIS is also one of the UKM’s centres of excellence. CIS was established in 1993 following the Agenda 21 of the Rio Declaration. Since its inception, the centre has collection of over 100,000 specimens, of which >120 are type specimens. CIS has its own world-circulated journalĀ SERANGGA, which is dedicated to publication of research findings in insect systematics and diversity, particularly of Southeast Asia as well as other parts of the world.

 

Roles and Objectives:
  • To provide infrastructure necessary for keeping arthropod collection
  • To make CIS the reference centre for all taxonomic and systematic works related to Malaysian entomological heritage
  • To conduct surveys and inventory works of insect fauna of Malaysia
  • To be known as the leading centre for insect systematics in the region and the world
  • To document and distribute information on insect diversity of Malaysia and the surrounding regions for the benefit of all
  • To become the National Centre for insect biodiversity data
  • To train biologists and/or entomologists interested in insect systematics
  • To conduct collaborative research with local and overseas entomologists
