CENTER FOR HEALTHY AGEING AND WELLNESS (H-Care)

Introduction

The CENTER FOR HEALTHY AGING AND WELLNESS STUDIES (H-CARE) was established in 2012. Initially, H-CARE was an Excellence Center that brought together a multidisciplinary team of researchers from various faculties at the National University of Malaysia. After a recent restructuring, H-CARE has been supported by a group of researchers specializing in geriatric/aging research and well-being for healthy aging from the Faculty of Health Sciences. H-CARE has 17 research teams and is backed by 6 support staff with a forward-looking vision and mission to ensure great achievements are attained.

H-CARE’s outstanding achievements have been proven through several successful LRGS grants with high impact, such as the LRGS TUA grant in 2012, which received a funding of RM5.4 million from the Ministry of Higher Education. This success has fostered strong and excellent collaborations in research to formulate global strategies in reducing dementia risk factors.

Among them is a collaboration with the International Research and Network on Dementia (IRNDP), Cohort Studies of Memory in an International Consortium (COSMIC), and the World Health Organization Committee on Dementia Risk Reduction. Another success was achieved in 2019 through research collaboration with the University of Malaya when H-CARE secured a RM1.4 million LRGS AGELESS TRIAL grant for the “Cognitive Frailty” project. This project was recognized to be registered under the World Wide FINGERS project.

Additionally, the SLIM SHAPE project, one of H-CARE’s highly popular and recognized initiatives, was awarded the most popular program for Local Agenda 21 by the Putrajaya Corporation. H-CARE also successfully established the first Senior Activity Center (PAWE @ UKM) within the University at Kolej Keris Mas, UKM Bangi. The establishment of this center was supported by funding from the Department of Social Welfare.

Furthermore, H-CARE’s collaboration with the industry has also demonstrated a transition towards fruitful partnerships, with research grants being awarded to produce potentially impactful studies. H-CARE researchers have also received 2 international grants in 2020, one from the World Health Organization and another from The Newton-Ungku Omar Fund. These projects and translational programs in the field of aging and well-being showcase the solid credibility of the H-CARE research team, who are deeply committed to creating a healthy and vibrant society from an early age.
