We are pleased to inform the JSM Colloquium Series will be held as follows:
Title : Exploring Political Leaders’ Speeches Impact on State Expenditures
Speaker : Dr. Nur Firyal binti Roslan, Actuarial Science Programme, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
Abstract : Political leaders play an important role in determining the development of a country. Political speeches are used to determine their commitment to certain agenda either towards people or business. Political speeches are used to persuade and motivate general audience in certain interest and how it is being reflected in economics. The main question is “Do they actually follow though their commitment to the people?” This paper specifically studies the relationship between the governors’ agendas based on US Governor’s State of State Addresses and state budget based on the Census Bureau. The analysis shows that that governors who were committed toward people were less likely to talk about business and economics in their speech. Moreover, this can be seen from state expenditures where governors will spend more money on public welfare budgets when they are more committed to helping people.
