The first International Management Accounting Conference was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1995. The theme was “Accounting and the Management of Organisations“. The main speakers were from Sweden, Australia, the UK, the USA, other ASEAN countries, and the host country, Malaysia. The conference received more than 200 participants from all over the world. The proceedings were published in three volumes. The success of the first conference paved the way for the second conference.
The second conference was jointly hosted by the Faculty of Business Management of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants in 1998. IMAC II was held at a prestigious hotel also in Kuala Lumpur with the theme “Organisational Challenges into the New Millennium“. Over 40 papers were presented by participants from various countries encompassing academicians and practitioners. The conference scored a first as a blend of an academic conference with professionals. The successful conclusion of the conference contributed towards breaching the gap between academia and the profession.
Beginning from the eighth conference, with the objectives to create an environment to network, exchange ideas, share knowledge, and pursue other developmental opportunities with colleagues from around the globe and across different business disciplines, IMAC has expanded its scope by promoting a collaborative effort between, (then) the School of Accounting and the School of Management of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Thus, to reflect this collaboration, IMAC has since been renamed to International Management and Accounting Conference to reflect this collaboration. IMAC8 with the theme “Leveraging Governance towards Sustainability” was held from the 28th to 29th of September 2016 at Langkawi Island, Kedah Malaysia.
The 9th International Management and Accounting Conference (IMAC9) with the theme “Revolutionising Sustainable Management and Governance for Industry 4.0” was held from the 11th to 13th November 2018 in Putrajaya, Malaysia. IMAC 9 was co-organised by the School of Management and the School of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. IMAC9 brought together leading academic researchers and scholars to an interesting knowledge-sharing and exchange event which covers a wide spectrum of scholarships in the fields of Management and Accounting, within the realm of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The IMAC 10 was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from 13 – 14 October 2021. This however presented a new opportunity as it allows more participation from across the globe at minimal cost and time. With the theme of “Revisiting Business and Accounting Perspective in New Era“, IMAC 10 aims to create an environment to network, exchange ideas, share knowledge, and pursue other developmental opportunities among researchers and practitioners around the globe and across different business disciplines.
The upcoming IMAC 11 will be held in Malacca, Malaysia from 27th to 28th July 2024 with the theme of “Transforming Business for a Responsive and Responsible Future“. This conference is dedicated to fostering an environment for networking, idea exchange, knowledge sharing, and the exploration of developmental opportunities among researchers and practitioners worldwide, spanning diverse business disciplines.
