Abstract
An Islamic financial institution (IFI) conducts its business without the element of interest. It is frequently preceived that such an institution can hardly compete with a conventional financial institution (CFI) of similar type since they are operating in an interest-based economic system. This paper attemps to show theoretically that the perception is not always true particularly when adequate attention is given to the changes in the depositors’ behaviour. In fact, a conclusion can be clearly derived here that IFIS tend to be stronger when more depositors shift their deposits from CFIS to tu IFIS resulting from the widespread Islamic consciousness in the society. This conclusion is based on a risk-return analysis of portfolio management of the depositors involved.
