Abstract
Firms enter international market to expand the market for their products. For that purpose, they require an adequate funding to finance their activity. This study aims to analyse the impact of financial constraints and exporting behaviour on firm productivity in Malaysia from year 2000 to 2015. The firms were selected among the listed companies at Bursa Malaysia. The generalized method of moments is used to analyse the data. In general, the results show that the internal financial factor played an important role to influence firm productivity in Malaysia. Besides that, firm size, firm age, leverage and lagged of productivity were also significant in influencing the firms’ productivity. Besides, the subsample analyses show that the exporting firms were very dependent on internal sources of financing. Nevertheless, the advantage of export reduced the dependence of firm productivity on internal finance. These results indicate the importance of export to mitigate the impact of financial constraints on productivity. As a result, the policy that eases export may able to ascertain the continuing increase in firm productivity and thus the economy may grow.
