The Department of Architecture and Built Environment (JSAB) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was established in November 2002, and the first student admission was in June 2003. In 2018, JSAB was split into two entities of the Department of Architecture and Built Environment (JSAB) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was established in November 2002, and the first student admission was in June 2003. In 2018, JSAB was split into two related entities namely the Architecture Program (PSB) & the Center for Innovative Architecture and Architecture (SErAMBI). In 2020, the restructuring of the department by the faculty by merging 2 different entities into one with the rebranding of the department, namely the Department of Architecture and Built Environment, UKM. Programs offered at the UKM Department of Architecture and Architecture are Undergraduate, Bachelor of Architectural Science with Honors (3 years), Postgraduate (Coursework), Master of Architecture with Honors (2 years), Postgraduate (Research) Master of Architectural Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

The purpose of creating this department was to realize the aspirations that began in 1971 when delegates at the National Cultural Congress Architecture Seminar Conference produced a resolution that read:

“To carry out the wishes of inspiration, the objectives expressed by the National centric architecture elements of Malay art. Rapid studies in this field must be commenced as soon as possible. A complete faculty of architecture needs to be established at the National University where all the facilities to foster studies can guarantee its development ”.

In line with the above, the department was created in 2003 to produce graduates in the field of architecture that seeks to develop the knowledge of the built environment that emphasizes human values, the place and the time factor, elevate the art and architecture of Malay as a guide in the development of the built environment, generate technology that benefits society, and internationalizes its image and contribution to the global community
