ABSTRACT
A geological investigation to characterize the geophysical properties of sandstone has been carried out on a cut slope situated at Km 1.5 Maran Lubuk Paku road. The cut slope has 3 major terraces located at 11.5 m, 25 m and 30 m above the main road Level. Lithologically, the slope composed of conglomerate and sandstone of the Tembeling Group. The main purpose of the investigation was to describe the International Association for Engineering Geologist (1981) weathering grade and determine geophysical characterization of the cut slope earth materials such as the seismic and sonic velocities and the dynamic elastic moduli. Results show that the sandstone has all the weathering grades from I to VI. Seismic survey results show that P-wave velocities range from 250–4000 (m/s), and S-wave velocities is from 75–1200 (m/s). Laboratory sonic tests on the core samples of grade 1 to 111 show that P-wave velocities range from 1350–6343 (m/s) and S-wave velocities range from 862–3187 (m/s). The sonic Young’s moduli of the cores are calculated to be in the range of 4.8- 71 GPa. The Shear Modulus is ranging from 1.9–27 GPa and the Bulk’s Modulus is within the range of 3.5–70 GPa. The saundtone in the study area is petrographically classified as lithic arenite.
