Abstract

Studies related to competence show that the problems associated with competence revolve around issues of definitions, approaches, different research results and models of competence. Issues of communication competence, especially among civil servants have also received research attention because competence has various implications for organizations. However, available studies on the issue from a non-western country are less common. This is attributable to the tendency of researchers from non-western countries to borrow and apply the western model irrespective of local values. Therefore, this article deals with the relationship between communication competence, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication and communication based on the context of communication satisfaction among civil servants in Malaysia. The method used in this study is cross-sectional survey carried out in two uniformed organizations. Data collection for the study was through questionnaire and was analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis. The results showed a significant relationship between intercultural communication competences, interpersonal communication competence, communication competence based on the context of communication satisfaction. The analysis also identified dimensions in every measurement of competencies that predict communication satisfaction. Implications and suggestions for future research were also discussed.
