Abstract

This exploratory study seeks to identify demographic characteristics of local internet users, tourist information needs and characteristics of tourism websites. It also seeks to study the relationship between information and internet users’ motivation to travel. A survey was conducted in the Klang Valley involving 120 respondents, comprising public and private sector employees. It used a questionnaire containing 51 questions. The findings revealed that a majority of website users are in the 20-35 age group, are highly educated and earn a monthly income of RM3,000 – RM5,000. These local internet users have positive perceptions of website information. The most important information needed by local internet users surveyed are location and accommodation. Desired features are real pictures and animated video clips. Creative marketing strategies and more effective tactics of information presentation are suggested to increase the awareness and frequency of website usage for tourism. This is consistent with the governmentís vision to boost the tourism industry as well as in developing a Malaysian ‘IT community’.
