Abstract :
The most acceptable definition food security was defined by the World Food Summit in 1996 as situation “when all people, at all times, have physical, social and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life” (FAO, 1996). Achieving food security means ensuring that everyone in a population has access to sufficient food to meet their dietary needs. This includes having an adequate and stable supply of affordable healthy food. Rice a staple food for about 32 million people in Malaysia. This crop is a home for the poor and poorest people. On the government side, it is important to ensure that every consumer has access to rice at a reasonable price. This discussion aims to discuss the development of the paddy sector from the 1960s until the present. Sustainability issues related to the development of this sector ranging from the economic, socio-cultural and natural resource & environmental will be also discussed.
