UKM has plans and implements several initiatives to mitigate the impact of climate change. UKM has started planning to improve energy efficiency since 2015 by replacing conventional to smart-energy appliances. Furthermore, among the projects that have been carried out are the replacement of LED lights and the use of energy-saving computers. UKM has also pledged to use 100% new energy in daily activities to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The three main sources of new energy that have been developed in UKM are solar energy, hydrogen and biomass. Installation of solar power at UKM has started since 2020 at UKM Bangi Campus “A Million Tree Planting” program was launched as a large-scale environmental conservation measure to reduce the effects of climate change to provide continuous awareness in line with the SDG 13.

Low Carbon Energy Use

UKM measures the amount of low carbon energy used across the university. UKM has started planning to improve energy efficiency since 2015 by replacing conventional to smart-energy appliances. Until 2022, 40% of electrical goods in UKM have been changed to smart energy appliances that are more environmentally friendly.

Furthermore, among the projects that have been carried out are the replacement of LED lights and the use of energy-saving computers. UKM has also pledged to use 100% new energy in daily activities to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. The three main sources of new energy that have been developed in UKM are solar energy, hydrogen and also biomass.Installation of solar power at UKM has started since 2020 which involves 35 buildings located at UKM Bangi Campus. After installing solar, there will be a reduction of 16% per year to the electricity used.

UKM’S Plan Towards Upgrading Existing Buildings to Higher Efficiency

UKM has strategically planned for initiatives in developing affordable energy as well as energy efficiency, for instance, upgrading conventional lamps into high-efficient LED lamps and installing solar panels within UKM in its Sustainability Strategic Plan 2030 which can be accessed in page 45 and 46.

UKM Solar Power Installation

The UKM Solar Power project was implemented for the purpose of saving the university’s electricity costs. The value of the project is RM24 million. A 1,460,000 kWh solar panel has been installed on the roof of the UKM building in Bangi, involving 50 buildings. There is a cooperation period of 15 years and after 15 years the solar power project will be handed over to UKM for operation. The estimated savings to be obtained from the solar power project is electricity bill savings of at least 16% for each kWh used, equivalent to RM1.24 million per year (UKM pays 0.29 sen/kwh compared to 0.3465 sen/kwh for the first 10 years).

Green House@UKM

A greenhouse is a structure that allows people to regulate climatic conditions, such as temperature and humidity. There are many different designs of greenhouses; however, in general these buildings include large areas of transparent material to capture the light and heat of the sun. The three most common transparent materials used in the roof and walls of modern greenhouses are rigid plastics made of polycarbonate, plastic films made of polyethylene or glass panes. When the interior of a greenhouse is exposed to sunlight, the internal temperature rises and shelters the plants from cold weather.

The word greenhouse can be used interchangeably with the terms glasshouse and hothouse, depending on the building’s material and heating system. Buildings today are more commonly referred to as greenhouses because they can be constructed of a variety of materials, like wood and polyethylene plastic. A glasshouse, on the other hand, is a more traditional style of greenhouse that is only constructed with panes of glass to allow light into the building. The term hothouse implies that the greenhouse is heated through artificial means; however, both heated and unheated structures can be defined generally as greenhouses.

PC2-Certified Greenhouse

Institute of Systems Biology (INBIOSIS) is now equipped with its first PC2 Greenhouse (RTPC2) facility which enables research on genetically modified plants to be carried out within a secure and controlled environment. RTPC2 is also available to all UKM researchers as well as open for service to other universities or companies. The existence of the RTPC2 facility conforms to the mandatory requirements of the Biosafety Act 2007, especially in research involving genetic manipulation studies. The facility will helps to boost research in the field of biotechnology and crop improvement. Furthermore, the research to be carried out will help in developing modern biotechnological products and contributing to the advancement in the field that will bring not only bring benefit to the society but also facilitate UKM in achieving status as a world’s leading research university.

Open Roof Ventilation Green House

Open Roof Ventilation Green House is an automated system with controlled temperature, humidity and injection of carbon dioxide located at the Green House Complex, Faculty of Science and Technology, UKM. The aim of the project is to observe the impact of climate change, in particular, the impact of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration on biological species and ecosystem function.

The Open Roof Ventilation Greenhouse injects CO2 automatically in a closed system elevated concentrations of 550-650 ppm daily at certain time intervals. At the time of no injection, the system is an open system where temperature and humidity are controlled at the required values. The target biological species shall be exposed to the CO2 high concentration for a certain period to look at the ecological and physiological responses of the target species, for example, changes of chlorophyll a/b ratio, changes in the leaf area index and in the growth rate of the plant species.

Climate Change and Environmental Centre of Excellent at UKM

The Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI)

LESTARI was established on 1st October 1994 as a multidisciplinary institute within the structure of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. It fulfills the aspirations of the university, as envisioned by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to realise the goal of sustainable development through research and capacity development.

LESTARI was also established to serve as a reference centre capable of dealing with environment and development issues, assisting government in formulating policies based on research of a holistic and balanced kind. The development function is directed towards enhancing human resource capacity through skill development and training, for both government and private sectors.

UKM-YSD Chair for Sustainability

In Sept 2007, the Ministry of Higher Education recognised the value of having senior management in the university (ie Deputy VC for Industry and Community Partnerships) to focus on and drive engagement with industry, NGOs, govt agencies and communities to establish mutually beneficial partnerships.  All of these aim to enhance and enrich the core business of the university – education, research and service.

Through this portfolio, one of the valuable platforms that drives research via public-private partnership is that of an endowed chair.  UKM’s relationship with Yayasan Sime Darby began through the creation of an endowed chair which contributes to a powerful university-industry partnership as it provides for funding which catalyses and leapfrogs the development of a critical area of knowledge.
