Employment Policy on Discrimination

At Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), we are committed to fostering an environment where every individual is valued and respected. Our Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Discrimination Policy is not just a guideline; it is a promise to uphold the dignity and rights of all our citizens, it is refer to Article 8, Basic Rights, Clause 2 in the Federal Constitution of Malaysia. UKM provides that all persons are equal before the law and entitled to its equal protection. Through this policy, UKM embraces and uphold principles of equality, diversity, inclusiveness, and anti-discrimination in all aspects of their work, teaching, research, and management. This includes ensuring equal rights and opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age, or other protected characteristics under Malaysian law. UKM also promotes practices that foster unity and integration, actively prevents discrimination, harassment and bullying, and it is supports individuals requiring special assistance. The same goes for Disabled Persons (OKU) in obtaining full access to the learning system, work environment and campus life that is inclusive and free from barriers and discrimination through the preparation of the UKM Disability Admission Policy 2019. Decision-making processes should include diverse perspectives, and recruitment and promotion criteria must be regularly reviewed to eliminate bias, aligning with legal and policy frameworks.

UKM Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Discrimination Policy

The Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Discrimination Policy at UKM addresses the need to uphold equal rights for all individuals based on various characteristics protected under Malaysian law. This includes:

  1. Gender: UKM ensures equal rights and opportunities regardless of gender, supporting fair treatment in hiring, promotions, and educational opportunities for both men and women.
  2. Race and Ethnicity: The policy promotes a discrimination-free environment that values racial and ethnic diversity, encouraging unity and respect among individuals from various backgrounds.
  3. Age: UKM commits to equal treatment across age groups, fostering an environment that respects individuals at different life stages, whether students or staff, and preventing age-based discrimination.
  4. Physical Condition and Disabilities: Individuals with disabilities are supported through inclusive practices and assistance programs, aligned with the UKM Disability Inclusion Policy, to ensure access and accommodations.
  5. Religion and Nationality: Respect for diverse religions and nationalities is central to UKM’s policy, promoting a multicultural campus where individuals are free from discrimination based on religious or national affiliations.
  6. Family and Marital Status: The policy extends equal treatment to individuals irrespective of their family responsibilities or marital status, which helps create an inclusive work and educational environment.

In line with Article 8 of the Malaysian Constitution, this policy ensures fair treatment in all university activities, including education, employment, and campus life, while also mandating periodic reviews to uphold these principles as societal and legal standards evolve.

UKM Disabled Inclusive Policy is implemented according to suitability, conditions and current needs in stages. UKM is committed to fulfilling the rights and taking care of the needs of students, staff and visitors with Disabled Persons (OKU) in gaining full access to the learning system, work environment and campus life that is inclusive and free from barriers and discrimination. UKM’s Inclusive Policy for the Disabled is as follows:

Manage the administration of disabled students, staff and visitors at all levels of university administration.

  1. Providing easy access to buildings, infrastructure and services for disabled students, staff and visitors.
  2. Develop support services that provide an inclusive learning, work and campus environment.
  3. Identify and eliminate discrimination against PWDs and protect them from any harassment and threats.
  4. Creating a campus community culture that cares about the disabled.
