UKM Bangi Campus Traffic Census
The UKM Strategy Centre (Strategi UKM), in collaboration with researchers from the Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, conducted a comprehensive traffic census at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Bangi Campus on 19 February 2025, from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The study aimed to identify vehicle movement patterns within the campus to support UKM’s sustainability goals by optimizing parking space utilization, reducing carbon emissions and enhancing campus mobility efficiency. The census was carried out at three key locations selected as census stations:
- Station 1 – Near the Kolej Keris Mas intersection
- Station 2 – Roundabout at the Faculty of Science and Technology
- Station 3 – Near the Department of Infrastructure Development

Throughout the study, the focus was on identifying peak traffic hours, the types of vehicles most frequently used, and the main traffic flows contributing to congestion on campus. The findings have successfully identified key challenges in traffic management, particularly during peak hours and highlighted the urgent need for a more systematic and environmentally friendly transportation system.
As part of the improvement measures, several recommendations were proposed, including promoting the use of campus buses, enhancing the network of pedestrian and bicycle pathways and exploring the possibility of reducing private vehicle usage within the campus. Additionally, rescheduling internal public transport services and raising awareness about the impact of traffic on sustainability were highlighted as strategic steps toward a greener campus. This census serves as a valuable guide for planning a more efficient and sustainable transportation system at UKM, aligning with the university’s aspiration to become a low-carbon and eco-friendly campus.
