Climate Change and Environmental Centre of Excellent at UKM
Institute For Environment and Development (LESTARI)
The Environment and Development Institute (LESTARI) was established on 1 October 1994 as an institute that conducts research and training activities in multidisciplinary fields under the structure of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Its establishment fulfills the aspirations of the university inspired during the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to realize the goals of sustainable development through research and capacity building.
LESTARI was established to carry out comprehensive and balanced research related to the environment and development and to assist the government in policy formation. The establishment of LESTARI also works to improve human resource capabilities through skills training and development among government officials, the private sector and the community.
Climate Change Institute (IPI)
Objective:
- To place Malaysia in the world of international politics in matters of climate change and related issues.
- Improve teaching at the master’s and doctoral level in the field of climate and local and global climate change.
- Build and enhance university and national expertise and capabilities in the fields of climate science and climate change, meteorology, climatology, atmospheric science and oceanography, impact and adaptation through research and the output of master of science, doctoral and post-doctorate graduates.
- To be an interdisciplinary and cross-border research institute in conducting research and educating graduates focused on climate variability, ecosystem change and the interaction between humans and nature.
- Become a domestic and international reference center for teaching, research and development of the latest technology related to it.
- To be a data depository and monitoring center for all matters related to climate and climate change and at the same time able to generate income through research, consultation, advocacy and legislation.
Physical and Living Lab Management Centre (ALAF-UKM)
The UKM Physical and Living Lab Management Centre or ALAF-UKM was approved for establishment on 8 September 2022, it is the result of the restructuring of several research centers consisting of 4 Natural Laboratories and 2 Physical Laboratories.
ALAF-UKM will be the management entity that will monitor and coordinate each research laboratory centrally at the UKM Physical and Living Lab Management Centre (ALAF-UKM), Level 2, UKM Research Complex, 43600 UKM, Bangi, Selangor.
Department of Earth Sciences and Environment (FST)
The Center for Earth and Environmental Sciences (PSBAS) was established in early 2018 to replace the Department of Earth Sciences and Environment (PPSSSA). Located in the Geology Building, the center focuses on research spanning the fields of Geology, Environment & Marine Sciences (physical).
IDEA UKM
The plan for the establishment of the IDEA UKM Center or IDEA UKM acronym INNOVATIVE, DYNAMIC, EFFICIENCY and ACCOUNTABILITY was approved in the MPU meeting number 9/2017 on 8 August 2017. This centre was inaugurated on 20 November 2017 by YB Minister of Higher Education at the launch of the UKM program – International Integrated Conference (UKM-IIC). One of the main functions of the establishment of the UKM IDEA Center is to stimulate the emergence of impactful multidisciplinary research ideas to find complete solutions to the Perdana challenges facing the country.
UKM-YSD Chair For Sustainability
In Sept 2007, the Ministry of Higher Education recognised the value of having senior management in the university (ie Deputy VC for Industry and Community Partnerships) to focus on and drive engagement with industry, NGOs, govt agencies and communities to establish mutually beneficial partnerships. All of these aim to enhance and enrich the core business of the university – education, esearch and service.
Through this portfolio, one of the valuable platforms that drives research via public-private partnership is that of an endowed chair. UKM’s relationship with Yayasan Sime Darby began through the creation of an endowed chair which contributes to a powerful university-industry partnership as it provides for funding which catalyses and leapfrogs the development of a critical area of knowledge.
This began in early 2010, when UKM convinced Yayasan Sime Darby of its strengths and the value of establishing a UKM-YSD endowed chair for the science of climate change. We were eventually successful and the chair was launched in the early part of 2010.
Just after this, on the 11th February 2010, UKM together with 7 other public universities received an invitation from YSD to submit a proposal for the establishment of an endowed chair for sustainable development. These were part of its activities to promote the conservation of the environment and the protection of ecosystems. YSD decided to cooperate with a top Malaysian university by providing financial support for the research and other relevant activities in the area of sustainable development. Several universities presented their proposals, and based on a set of evaluations, UKM was chosen with its aim to lead and direct research relevant to the palm oil industry to make Malaysia a model for sustainable development for the world.
Center for Research in Development, Social and Environment (SEEDS-FSSK)
Center for Research in Development, Social and Environment (SEEDS) plays a role as a generator and developer of knowledge about society, culture, development and the physical environment through a wide scope, but focused, by combining social science knowledge in the fields of anthropology, sociology, geography and development science. This Study Center also aims to create an environment for learning, research, publication and discourse that is sensitive to various current schools of thought about society and culture, development challenges and environmental issues.
Centre for Diagnostic, Therapeutic & Investigative Studies (CODTIS)
Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI)
The Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is a renowned research institution dedicated to advancing the development and utilization of solar energy in Malaysia and beyond. With a strong commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions, SERI plays a vital role in driving the country’s transition towards clean and renewable energy sources. Recognized for its cutting-edge research, innovative technologies, and multidisciplinary approach, SERI brings together experts from diverse fields such as engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science, and environmental science. SERI’s research primarily focuses on enhancing the efficiency, reliability, and affordability of solar energy systems.
Fuel Cell Institute (SELFUEL)
The establishment of Fuel Cell Institute (Institut Sel Fuel), the first research institute in Malaysia conducting research on fuel cell and hydrogen energy, was approved by the Ministry of Higher Education on the 1st of July 2006. The name of the Institute was initially Institute of Fuel Cell Technology (Institut Teknologi Sel Bahan Api). The new name Fuel Cell Institute (Institut Sel Fuel) was approved on 14th July 2007.
