Number of Campus Sites
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), or the National University of Malaysia, was established on May 18, 1970. It was created with the aim of promoting higher education and research in the Malay language and to serve as a catalyst for national development and unity. UKM was initially located in Kuala Lumpur before relocating to its current campus in Bandar Baru Bangi, Hulu Langat District, Selangor, Malaysia, in 1993. The university has grown significantly over the decades, offering a wide range of programs across various disciplines, including science, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. As one of Malaysia’s leading universities, UKM plays a pivotal role in contributing to research and development in the country, with a strong emphasis on producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also socially responsible and capable of addressing national and global challenges. The university is also recognized for its commitment to promoting multiculturalism and inclusivity in education. Besides of main campus at UKM Bangi, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia also has our own Learning and Research Center (Living Lab) which located in Tasik Chini Research Center (PPTC), in Pekan, Pahang, Langkawi Research Center (PPL) (UNESCO Global Geopark) in Kedah, UKM Marine Ecosystem Research Centre (EKOMAR) in Mersing Johor, Fraser’s Hill Research Centre (PPBF), in Raub, Pahang and UKM Permanent Reserve Forest Bangi that located in main Campus Bangi. Since its establishment on May 18, 1970, UKM has not only fulfilled the vision to make Malay as the language of learning and education but also succeeded in producing intellectuals and academicians all around the country and world. UKM is located in the suburban area of Bandar Baru Bangi, Hulu Langat, Selangor. Aligned with their mission to promote the sovereignty of Bahasa Melayu, red brick buildings are one of its most prominent features. The campus is surrounded by green areas and water surface which is Sungai Langat. The campus is accessible by road and rail transport. Figures 1.3.2 to 1.3.6 provide a comprehensive visual overview of the UKM Bangi campus and its key landmarks. Figure 1.3.2 showcases the main entrance of UKM’s Bangi campus, giving a first glimpse into the campus grounds. Figure 1.3.3 shows Taman Seloka, one of the famous landmarks in UKM Bangi. Figure 1.3.4 features Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Razak, a prominent building in UKM that serves as a central hub for major events and ceremonies. Figure 1.3.5 provides an aerial view of the UKM Bangi campus, highlighting the vast and green landscape of the university. Lastly, Figure 1.3.6 focuses on an aerial view of the mosque, showcasing its architectural prominence within the campus setting. Together, these figures provide an insightful perspective into the physical layout and key structures of the UKM Bangi campus.

The UKM Living Lab serves as a premier learning and research hub, encompassing a diverse range of natural habitats, including marine ecosystems, freshwater environments, highlands and tropical rainforests. Strategically located across key sites such as Tasik Chini, Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, Mersing, Fraser’s Hill, and the UKM Bangi Permanent Forest Reserve, it provides an unparalleled Natural Laboratory for cutting-edge research. This unique facility not only advances UKM’s environmental and biodiversity conservation efforts but also offers visitors a rare opportunity to witness firsthand the impactful work of UKM scientists and researchers in preserving ecosystems, flora and fauna. This initiative underscores UKM’s leadership in sustainability and research excellence, contributing significantly to its high ranking and global recognition.
Tasik Chini Research Center in Pekan, Pahang
The Tasik Chini Research Center (PPTC) is a pivotal institution dedicated to advancing biotic and abiotic research across a wide spectrum, including the study of diverse flora and fauna, as well as water, soil, and air quality. Established with a focus on conducting cutting-edge research, teaching, fieldwork, and promoting environmental awareness, PPTC plays a key role in the dissemination of integrated lake management practices to the broader community. As Malaysia’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, Tasik Chini stands as a vital hub for sustainability and ecological studies. It underscores UKM’s leadership in environmental conservation, contributing significantly to global scientific efforts and solidifying its standing in high-ranking academic and research circles. Figures 1.3.7 to 1.3.10 provide a visual representation of the research center and its surrounding ecosystem.
Langkawi Research Center in Langkawi, Kedah
The Langkawi Research Centre (PPL), strategically located at the Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Campus within the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark, serves as a key hub for research and academic services. Focused on integrated heritage conservation and the sustainable development of geoparks, PPL plays a crucial role in preserving the natural and cultural heritage of Langkawi. By fostering strong partnerships with UNESCO, the center actively enhances the socioeconomic status of the region through sustainable tourism and conservation initiatives. This collaboration positions UKM at the forefront of global environmental efforts, reinforcing its role as a leader in sustainability and conservation. The Langkawi Research Centre’s contributions not only support environmental protection but also drive socioeconomic growth, further enhancing the region’s standing as a global geopark. This dual focus on scientific research and community impact showcases UKM’s dedication to sustainability, aligning with its broader academic mission and strengthening its standing in international high-ranking assessments. Figures 1.3.11 to 1.3.16 illustrate the research center’s facilities, surrounding Geoforest Park and the diverse activities offered, reflecting its significant role in advancing UKM’s goals of environmental stewardship and responsible development.

Marine Ecosystem Research Center (EKOMAR) in Mersing, Johor
The Marine Ecosystem Research Center (EKOMAR), located in Mersing, Johor, is a pivotal institution dedicated to advancing the field of marine science. Recognizing the critical importance of marine resources and technology for Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), established EKOMAR to spearhead comprehensive research on marine ecosystems and resources. EKOMAR’s scope extends beyond marine science, incorporating interdisciplinary studies in management, social sciences, marine law and engineering. This multidisciplinary approach strengthens its role as a knowledge hub, fostering public awareness on the significance of marine ecosystems and the urgent need for conservation measures.
By combining scientific research with community engagement, EKOMAR serves as a key platform for enhancing understanding of marine biodiversity and promoting sustainable marine resource management. Its efforts contribute directly to Malaysia’s long-term environmental goals, reinforcing UKM’s leadership in marine conservation and elevating its standing in high-ranking academic and research assessments. Figures 1.3.17 to 1.3.20 illustrate the center’s facilities, research activities, and the critical work being conducted, such as coral sampling in Mersing waters, which underscores EKOMAR’s active role in marine conservation efforts.

Fraser Hill Research Center (PPBF) in Fraser Hill, Pahang
The Fraser Hill Research Center (PPBF), established by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 1990, stands as a vital institution dedicated to the conservation of one of Malaysia’s most environmentally sensitive regions. Spanning 46 hectares of land generously provided by the Pahang State Government, PPBF plays a critical role in advancing research and education in a range of disciplines, including bioengineering, nanotechnology, hydrology, geology, botany, ecology, soil science and the study of flora and fauna. This multidisciplinary focus enhances both scientific knowledge and practical applications for environmental management. In addition to its academic pursuits, PPBF provides consulting services to various governmental agencies and institutions, such as the Pahang State Government, Perbadanan Kemajuan Bukit Fraser, Raub District Council and the State Forestry Department. These collaborations further cement PPBF’s role as a leading research center in conservation and sustainable development.
The research center’s work in fields such as natural disaster mitigation and social-environmental studies significantly contributes to Malaysia’s environmental stewardship and research reputation. Figures 1.3.21 to 1.3.25 depict key aspects of the Fraser Hill Research Center, including its aerial view, facilities, rest areas and sampling activities, as well as the rich biodiversity of flora and fauna found in the region. This reinforces UKM’s commitment to environmental preservation and its standing as a high-ranking institution in both national and international academic circles.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is a Malaysian public research university located in Bandar Baru Bangi, Hulu Langat, Selangor. The beauty of this campus with its green background and red brick building are one of its most prominent features. The campus is located 45 minutes from KLIA international airport and is accessible by road and rail transport.
Living labs in UKM
UKM living laboratories are among the most prominent features in UKM. They comprise natural habitat from marine, freshwater, highland, and tropical-rain forest. Langkawi Research Center (PPL) is dedicated to enhancing socioeconomic status through tourism and conservation at Langkawi Global Geopark. PPL also works in close cooperation with UNESCO. Another living lab is Tasik Chini Research Centre which serves as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the first of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
Other living labs are also keeping the same spirit. Marine Research Centre (EKOMAR) in Mersing, Johor focuses on the marine science field while Fraser Hill Research Centre concentrates on the conservation field.
Chini Lake Research Center in Pekan, Pahang
Chini Lake Research Center (PPTC) was established to promote biotic and abiotic based research activities that belong to the diversity of flora & fauna, water, soil and air. PPTC was established under the auspices of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), specifically to carry out research, teaching, field work, environmental awareness and the dissemination of integrated lake management information to the community.

Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) is located on the Campus of Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah, Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark. PPL is a focused centre in the Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) UKM, with roles to carry out research and academic services related to integrated heritage conservation and development of geoparks.
Marine Ecosystem Research Center (EKOMAR) in Kampung Tanjung Resang, Mersing, Johor
Realizing the significance of marine resources and technology in Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia through the Faculty of Science and Technology has established the Marine Ecosystem Research Centre (EKOMAR) to conduct research related to the marine ecosystem and resources. EKOMAR has been established not only to benefit studies on marine sciences and resources, but also to incorporate studies in the fields of management, social sciences, marine laws and engineering. It also aims to become a significant platform for enhancing knowledge and public awareness on the importance of marine ecosystem and control measures for the conservation of marine ecosystems.
Fraser Hill Research Center (PPBF) in Fraser Hill, Pahang
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) has established PPBF in 1990, following the delivery of a piece of land from the Pahang State Government in 1989 with an area of 45 hectares and began to explore the research in Fraser Hill that is environmentally sensitive areas. These include riparian forest edges, valleys, rivers and ridges.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, also known as UKM is located in an suburban area at Bandar Baru Bangi, in Hulu Langat District of Selangor, Malaysia. It has a total population of 342,657 with a total area of 101.9 km² and that makes it a high density area with 3,364 inhabitants per km².

Campus facilities for disabled, special needs and or maternity care
Disabled and special needs facilities
Existence of Disability Support Office
The Disabled Services And Support Unit (UPS-OKU) was established on 12th December 2019 under the Registrar’s Office, fully supervised by the Vice-Chancellor. The purpose of establishing this unit is to give support to the disabled staff and students according to their disability and empower them to succeed
in their careers and education in UKM. Currently, the number of staff and students who have registered under this unit is 48 staff and 59 students. The core functions of the unit are as below:
- Collect and process the entire information for the staff and students with disabilities;
- As a reference to any aspect of academic purposes, infrastructure and build a support system for any demand from the staff, students, and visitors with disabilities;
- Develop a relationship between government agencies, industry bodies, and Non-Government Organizations;
- Organizing program and awareness among UKM staff and students; and
- Receive and process any complaint regarding disability issues.
This unit was operated by referring to the Guidelines for Implementation of Disability Inclusive Policy in Higher Education Institutions (Garis Panduan Pelaksanaan Dasar Inklusif Orang Kurang Upaya di Institut Pendidikan Tinggi by Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), Strategic Planning for Disability Inclusive Policy 2019-2023 and UKM’s Strategic Planning (TERAS) 2021-2025. Campus is easily accessible by people with disabilities
Mobile Van Service
UKM has provided a mobile van service for disabled users and is managed by UPS-OKU. This mobile van was provided to the staff and students with disabilities to access from one place to another place in UKM’s campus and Klang Valley. This van has seven (7) seaters including a driver and wheelchair lift which is easier for wheelchair users. The maintenance of this van was fully conducted by UKM’s Vehicle Unit under the Registrar Department.

Accessible Toilet
Apart from transportation, UKM has also provided accessible toilets for disabled users. Currently, UKM has 64 accessible toilets for disabled users. These accessible toilets were provided by following the Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment (MS1184:2014) requirement.
The toilet has features as listed below:
- Outward opening/sliding door type.
- 1 movable grab bar and 1 fixed to the adjacent wall.
- Entrance clears from the obstacle.
- Lever types for all water tabs and flush handles.
- Mirror above the washbasin.
- Color contrast.
- Non-slippery flooring.
Accessible Toilet
UKM also provided 69 unit disabled parking to park their vehicles which are located as near as possible to the main entrance. The designated disabled parking has followed the requirement of the Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment (MS 1184:2014). Each parking will clearly be attached with the signboard to enable users easier to locate the parking.

Access schemes for people with disabilities
UKM has implemented an accessibility audit based on Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment (MS 1184:2014) requirement starting from 18th July 2022 until 30th September 2022. UKM has empowered Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) who has been appointed by the Vice Chancellor to conduct the auditing in their own building and office. The full report will be produced and presented to the Management of the University for further action by providing an inclusive infrastructure for disability users.

UKM offers on-campus accommodation
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) provides a residential college for students including students with disabilities. UKM has 12 residential colleges which are ten in Bangi Campus and two in the Kuala Lumpur Campus. Two residential colleges with accommodations suitable for students with disabilities are Ungku Omar College (KUO) (Figure 1a) and Dato’ Onn College (KDO) (Figure 1b). KDO has 1 room for male students and 1 room for female students while KUO has 3 rooms for male students and 3 rooms for female students.

Ramp
The ramp has been provided especially for wheelchair users and is located near the main entrance and the gradient has followed the Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment (MS 1184:2014) requirement. Besides, the entire access to the main entrance also provided a ramp.
Accessible toilet
Both residential colleges have provided the toilet, according to the Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment (MS 1184:2014) requirement. The sliding door type has been built to ease students who have been using a wheelchair. 1 grab bar and 1 fixed to the adjacent wall also has been provided. All the equipment has used lever-type handles and the position of the mirror is suitable for a wheelchair user.
Switches
The position of the switches followed the requirement of the Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment (MS 1184:2014) which is 120-130 cm above the floor for both residential colleges. This requirement is suitable for wheelchair users and dwarf people.
Furniture
The entire furniture has been provided and accessible for any type of person with disabilities. The students find it easier to use the facilities without any help from others.
Disabled Parking
Both residential colleges also provided disabled parking which is located as near as possible to the main entrance. The designated disabled parking has followed the requirement of the Universal Design and Accessibility in the Built Environment (MS 1184:2014). Each parking will clearly be attached to the signboard to enable users easier to locate the parking.
Reasonable accommodation policy or strategy for people with disabilities, including adequate funding
UKM provides accommodations for students including students with disabilities. UKM has 12 residential colleges which are ten colleges in Bangi Campus and two in the Kuala Lumpur Campus. Two residential colleges with accommodations suitable for students with disabilities are Ungku Omar College (KUO) and Dato’ Onn College (KDO). KDO has 1 room for male students and 1 room for female students while KUO has 3 rooms for male students and 3 rooms for female students.
Adequate funding
UKM through the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) received an amount of RM 600,000.00 from the Ministry of Finance (MOF) to upgrade infrastructure for disabled users. There are four projects that have been determined based on the allocation given. Currently, the progress of the project focuses on upgrading and renovating an administrative office, disabled one-stop center, an accessible toilet and ramp in Chancellery Building and Kuala Lumpur Campus also accommodating people with disabilities.
Library services for persons with disabilities
UKM also provides access in the library, Tun Seri Lanang Library (PTSL) for disabled people, such as :
- Disabled toilets on level 4 for convenience and freedom of mobility.
- The disabled prayer room on level 3 ensures comfort during worship.
- Carrel Room is specially designed to meet the needs of our customers.
- The disabled room is equipped with equipment that facilitates movement.
- Discussion rooms, quiet spaces, and more to connect and exchange knowledge.
Maternity care facilities
UKM concerns about the importances on UKM community needs, especially women and pregnant women. In both clinics, which are UKM Obstetrics & Gynecology Clinic (Figure 8 ) and UKM Polyclinic (Figure 9) , UKM provides maternity checkups and lactation rooms for needed parties.

TUNAS Kindergarten UKM
Tunas Kindergarten UKM has been in operation since 1980, in which the Nursing Department is handled under Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSK) and the Pre-School Department is under Faculty of Education (FPEND). The kindergarten was registered under the government act, Education Act 1961 – Kindergarten and Nursery School Teaching Methods on 13 December 2018. Programme available in Tadika Tunas UKM are the early childhood education for kids aged four, five and six years old. This programme is based on National Preschool Standards-Based Curriculum (KSPK) and is in compliance with the guidelines from the Ministry of Education of Malaysia (KPM).

UKM Safety Department
Shortly after the establishment of UKM on 18 May 1970, the UKM Safety Department also known as Wisma Aman (Figure 1) was formed under Jabatan Pendaftar (Registrar Department). This department has been available for the UKM community 24 hours every day and since its early establishment, the Safety Department has played its role entrusted by the university’s top management. Their main duties in UKM is as listed below:
- Be in charge of university’s properties
- Take care of public tranquility in campus
- Responsible for traffic control and enforcement of traffic regulations
- Start-up of fire control
- Responsible for controlling and ensuring no crimes in the campus as well as forming case investigations.

UKM Center for Risk Management, Occupational Safety and Health (ROSH-UKM)
ROSH-UKM was established with a vision to shape UKM into an educational institution that has a safe and healthy work environment through a planned work ethics and sustainable risk management. ROSH also strives to ensure UKM practices effective risk management in many areas such as safety, health, teaching environment, infrastructure, governance and finance. This center takes charge of UKM through three departments, which are governance, risk management, and occupational safety and health.
