Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
SDG 13 Indicator
13.3 – Environmental Education Measures
13.3.4 – Inform and Support Government
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively participates in cooperative planning for climate change disasters, working closely with government agencies to address challenges, including potential displacement of populations both domestically and internationally. Through collaborative and research initiatives, UKM informs and strengthens government efforts in disaster preparedness and climate resilience, ensuring communities are better equipped to respond to and recover from climate-induced challenges. UKM plays a vital role in informing and supporting regional governments in their efforts to address climate change disasters and risks. Through collaborative research, knowledge sharing, and capacity building initiatives, UKM equips governmental bodies with the necessary tools and insights for effective disaster preparedness and response.
- Institute of Climate Change (IPI) Research Fellow Dr Siti Norliyana Harun has been appointed as a subject matter expert for the “Big Data Integrated Management of National Landslide Geological Disasters” project for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and the Department of Minerals and Geosciences Malaysia (JMG), starting March 15, 2023. - Appointment of the IPI Director as a member of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Working Group Committee for the UNFCCC Waste sector on climate change. The GHG Inventory Working Group Committee for the UNFCCC Waste Sector is essential in tackling climate change by standardizing methods for measuring emissions from waste activities, such as solid waste disposal and wastewater treatment. Guided by the 2006 IPCC Guidelines, the committee ensures countries can consistently report waste sector emissions, aiding transparency and comparability. It also supports capacity-building, especially for developing nations, through training and resources, enabling them to enhance data accuracy and meet reporting requirements. This work is crucial for global emission reduction efforts and for implementing effective climate mitigation strategies within the waste sector.

- The development of the OneStop Data Curation portal for Climate Change Research in Malaysia (MyIKLIM) aims to provide a comprehensive platform for climate change research data. This tool helps local and regional governments enhance their early warning and monitoring capabilities for climate change related disasters. By offering accessible data, customised alerts, and a user friendly interface, myIKLIM supports proactive risk management and informed decision making, reinforcing UKM role in climate resilience and adaptation.
