SDG 15 – LIFE ON LAND

Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

15.3 – Supporting Land Ecosystems Through Action

15.3.5 – Collaboration for Shared Land Ecosystems

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) actively collaborates with local communities, government agencies, and national organizations, including the National Botanical Garden, to maintain and preserve shared land ecosystems. Through these partnerships, UKM strengthens its commitment to biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, and community engagement. Joint initiatives led by UKM Pusat Pengurusan Landskap (PPL) and partner organizations include reforestation projects, native species conservation, and sustainable agriculture practices. These collaborative efforts align with UKM commitment to the 100% implementation of SDG 15: Life on Land, emphasizing a holistic approach to ecosystem restoration and sustainable land use education. UKM prioritizes community involvement and environmental stewardship by facilitating workshops, field activities, and awareness campaigns to empower local communities as key stakeholders in land conservation. This active engagement helps ensure the long-term resilience and health of Malaysia’s ecosystems.

UKM Collaboration for Shared Land Ecosystems

  1. World Clean Up Day 2023

UKM involvement in World Clean Up Day 2023, organized by the Pusat Penyelidikan Langkawi (PPL-ALAF). A group of 40 UKM delegates, in collaboration with LADA (Langkawi Development Authority), E-Idaman, and the local community, participated in a cleanup activity on an island near Pulau Pasir Panjang. The event began with a visit to the Geopark Discovery Centre, followed by a boat trip to the cleanup site. This hands-on event aimed to mitigate pollution, protect biodiversity, and promote responsible waste practices within an ecologically sensitive area. Beyond direct conservation, the initiative served as an educational platform, deepening participants’ understanding of environmental impact and the importance of communal action in protecting shared ecosystems. UKM collaboration for shared land ecosystems reflects a deep commitment to sustainable land management, biodiversity preservation, and community involvement. By fostering partnerships and championing SDG 15: Life on Land, UKM continues to inspire long-term environmental stewardship and resilience in Malaysia’s vital ecosystems.

  1. UKM Sustainable use, conservation and restoration of land

UKM collaborates with a licensed company to manage two agricultural lands dedicated to oil palm cultivation, supporting shared land ecosystem goals through sustainable practices. Under this partnership, the company handles operational responsibilities, including revenue collection, plantation maintenance, and sustainable practices such as fertilization, pruning, and infrastructure upkeep. This collaboration not only ensures the effective management of the plantations but also provides UKM staff and students with valuable access to these sites for research, educational activities, and recreational purposes. By fostering an environment for practical learning and sustainable agricultural development, UKM strengthens its commitment to promoting responsible land use and supporting sustainable ecosystems.

Location:

  • Kuala Pilah Oil Palm Plantation
  • UKM Bangi Oil Palm Plantation

Operations:

  • The company is responsible for revenue collection and the upkeep of the oil palm plantation, including tasks such as fertilization, frond pruning, and road maintenance.
  • UKM staff and students are permitted to conduct various activities on the plantation, such as research and recreational activities like running.

UKM’s Oil Palm Plantation serves as a dynamic platform for research, community engagement, and collaborative learning, advancing shared land ecosystem goals. Accessible to researchers, students, and community members, the plantation offers opportunities to explore sustainable agricultural practices, engage in hands-on projects, and gain insights into oil palm management. By making the plantation available for educational and community-oriented activities, UKM promotes active involvement, supports research in sustainable land management, and strengthens its commitment to environmental stewardship.

UKM’s oil palm plantation undergoes regular monitoring to ensure sustainable management practices, and it also serves as one of the designated tracks for the Larian Denai UKM 2023 trail run
  1. CSR Green Project CSR  in Zoo Negara

The UKM CSR Green Project at Zoo Negara, held on March 4, 2023, exemplifies UKM commitment to collaborative ecosystem management and wildlife conservation. This community service initiative, highly valued by Zoo Negara, provided essential support for the zoo’s daily operations and conservation efforts. Participants, including UKM staff and volunteers, received an orientation and were organized into teams, each working under the supervision of zookeepers. They engaged in a variety of tasks such as cleaning enclosures, feeding animals, and assisting in biodiversity areas like the Rimba Biodiversiti, as well as the giraffe and tapir enclosures. This immersive experience allowed volunteers to gain a deeper understanding of zoo operations and offered a rare opportunity to learn about animal care and species conservation from knowledgeable zookeepers. By accessing behind-the-scenes areas, participants witnessed and contributed to the detailed care required for different species, broadening their awareness of the complexities involved in wildlife conservation. Through meaningful interactions with zookeepers, volunteers gained insights into various species’ habitats, population challenges, and conservation statuses, fostering a stronger appreciation for biodiversity. Initiatives like this are invaluable in raising awareness about the necessity of animal conservation and cultivating a sense of responsibility towards protecting wildlife. Additionally, this project strengthened community bonds and team spirit, promoting sustained collaboration in the management of shared ecosystems and the conservation of Malaysia’s rich biodiversity. UKM is dedicated to continuing such initiatives to educate and engage the public on the importance of safeguarding natural habitats and wildlife for future generations.
