1. UKM MOOC system (UKM Massive Open Online Courses)
UKM continues implementing an education for SDGs in the wider community in line with the university’s agenda to increase generation, the UKM MOOC system (UKM Massive Open Online Courses) has been developed. This initiative involves offering courses for internal students as well as external students who are not registered with UKM (alumni, local community, displaced people and refugees). Students are also exposed to global learning which in turn supports the university’s agenda to improve the marketability of graduates.

2. UKM Shape Professional Certificate
UKM Shape Professional Certificate is an initiative under Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) efforts to support lifelong learning and professional development. This program offers professional certificates in various fields, designed to provide practical skills and knowledge for both UKM students and the broader community.

The teaching learning methods will involve short concept videos, case based discussions and mini teaching appraisals. An introduction of scholarship of teaching learning will also be discussed. |
3 | Auditory-Verbal Therapy | Auditory-Verbal Therapy (AVT) is a recognised approach that has been shown to be successful in providing positive spoken language outcomes for children with hearing loss. However, in Asia, the number of professionals skilled in AVT is quite limited. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia through the HEARS Centre is offering a professional certificate program that trains hearing professionals in the field of AVT. This is the only such program in the region conducted and accredited by a university. This program offers two AVT learning packages: The Clinical Package and the Theoretical Only Package. |
4 | Ageing & Geriatric Rehabilitation | The objective of this course is to provide knowledge in the care of older adults to improve their independent skills. The course will be delivered through lectures, practical sessions, field works and visits. Assessments of the course will be done through continuous examination, practical examination, assignment and presentation. |

7 | Regulatory Affairs of Herbs, Supplements, and Cosmetics | The era of biotechnology has brought rapid development and progress in various industrial fields in Malaysia and around the world, this development includes the development of health products such as herbal medicines, health supplements, and cosmetics. The exponential regulatory system gives the impression that knowledge in the field of health product development is complex and difficult to understand. This causes many controversial issues regarding the results of health and cosmetic products. Therefore, the purpose of this course is to give exposure to researchers and industry in the registration of products at the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) and to encourage the exchange of ideas among researchers and industry in the field of product registration so that negative perceptions related to the difficulty of registering health products such as herbal medicines, supplements and cosmetics can be reduced. |
8 | Medicolegal in Healthcare Practice | The purpose of the course is to provide an exposure and knowledge enhancement regarding medicolegal aspects of healthcare practices. The course contents which includes introduction to medicolegal, issues and risk in medicolegal as well as approach in handling complaints are suitable for medical and healthcare providers, as well as other healthcare professionals and administrators working directly or indirectly in the disciplines involving quality of healthcare, patient safety and clinical risk management. The course will be delivered via lectures, case discussions, and observation sessions. |
3. Community Program: “Karnival Sentosa, Sihat dan Selamat”
The program conducted by Pusat Kesihatan Universiti (PKU) UKM at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Sentosa in Kuala Lumpur on September 20, 2023. This event was part of the “Karnival Sentosa, Sihat dan Selamat,” organized by the school and other agencies. It involved a hands-on training session in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and dental check-ups for students. The event aimed to enhance health knowledge and emergency preparedness among students. The activities involved in CPR training, dental check-ups were conducted by PKU’s dental officers.
4. Community Program: Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark Local Community Empowerment Workshop (Series 1: SK Batu Arang, Selangor)
The workshop on June 10, 2023, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Batu Arang in Selangor was indeed a significant step towards engaging local communities in heritage conservation through the geopark concept. As the inaugural workshop under UNESCO Malaysia’s Contribution Grant (SKUM), it focused on raising awareness among educators and students about the Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark, emphasizing the importance of preserving natural and cultural heritage for sustainable regional development.
With 34 teachers, known as “Coalians,” led by Head Teacher Puan Nini Nafaizah Mokhtar, the session included insights from experts, Prof. Associate Dr. Tanot Unjah and Prof. Associate Dr. Sharina Abdul Halim, who introduced the participants to the heritage and ecological aspects of the geopark. The workshop sparked discussions about local heritage, and educators expressed ideas for developing primary school training modules aligned with the geopark’s educational themes. Additionally, participants toured the Black Diamonds Gallery, experiencing firsthand the community’s efforts in conserving coal mining heritage and fostering a sense of identity among students.
Plans are underway to expand this initiative to include additional primary schools within the Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark region, with future sessions anticipated to incorporate field trips to heritage sites, further cementing the connection between local communities and their unique natural and cultural environment. This approach holds the promise of creating a network of educators and students dedicated to sustainable heritage conservation.

5. Community Program: University Carnival For Society (U4S) Central Zone: Community Banteras Aedes, Easy 123
29/01/2023-The Department of Higher Education (JPT) today held the University For Society (U4S) program which is a high-impact initiative combining the expertise of three universities namely Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM). The collaboration of these three universities will not only be beneficial but can produce positive changes for the communities involved.
Members of the Selangor Central Zone U4S Committee led by UKM implemented a project titled “Dengue Eradication and Community Sustainability in Hulu Langat, Selangor”. The inauguration ceremony and launch of this program which was held at Section 1 Football Field, Taman Prima Saujana, Kajang was completed by Yang Bahagia Dato’ Mohd Sharil bin Abdullah, Director of JPT’s Industry and Community Collaboration Division (BKIM).
Top Management from all three Universities attended this event. UPNM Top Management who attended led by Prof Ts. Dr Muhd Zu Azhan bin Yahya, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Student Affairs Division. The ceremony was also attended by the Top Management of UKM and UPM, Senior Officials of the KPT, Kajang Municipal Council, COMBI, BASF (M) Sdn Bhd and residents of Taman Prima Saujana.

6. Community Program: KPT Prihatin MADANI Stay Healthy Program by HCTM UKM
On 19 Ogos 2023, The KPT PRIHATIN MADANI STAY HEALTHY program, hosted by Tuanku Muhriz Chancellor Hospital (HCTM) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), exemplifies a collaborative approach between higher education institutions and local communities. Held in Tanjung Sedili, Kota Tinggi, Johor, this initiative was warmly supported by the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and attended by the Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. The program aims to bridge the relationship between academia and society, allowing institutions to apply their expertise in ways that address the practical needs of the community.
As part of this HCTM outreach, residents benefited from free health services, including medical examinations, treatment, and counseling. The program also involved compassionate acts, with YB Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin and the HCTM team visiting local homes and distributing mercy baskets to families in need.
In his address, the Minister expressed hope that such initiatives will continue to be embraced by the community, enhancing UKM’s role as a proactive contributor to societal well-being. The presence of UKM’s Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Mr. Ts. Dr. Mohd Ekhwan Toriman, and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Network Affairs), YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Ts. Dr. Norazah Mohd Nordin, further underscored UKM’s commitment to community engagement and service. This two-way effort strengthens not only UKM’s visibility but also showcases how higher education institutions can meaningfully impact society by sharing their knowledge, research, and innovations.
UKM demonstrates a strong commitment to promoting SDG education beyond its campus, engaging the wider community through diverse, impactful outreach initiatives. The UKM MOOC platform offers free courses to external learners, including alumni, local residents, and international students, expanding access to SDG-focused education and enhancing global learning. Through the UKM Shape Professional Certificate program, UKM supports lifelong learning and professional development for both students and the public in fields like health, data analytics, and regulatory affairs. Additionally, UKM conducts community-based programs such as the Gombak-Hulu Langat Geopark workshop, the U4S Dengue Eradication initiative, and the KPT Prihatin MADANI Stay Healthy program. These programs foster community health, heritage conservation, and environmental sustainability. Collectively, these initiatives reflect UKM’s proactive role in empowering communities with essential SDG knowledge and resources for sustainable development.
