Educational Objectives
The objective of PhD (Ethnic Studies) programme is to produce graduates who are:
- Able to relate and analyze problems in ethnic studies with inter- and multi-disciplinary conceptual and theoretical frameworks;
- Make critical analyses using social science methodologies to evaluate and synthesize new and complex ideas in ethnic studies;
- Contribute original research through theses and publications to broaden the boundaries of ethnic studies;
- Contribute knowledge and expertise through academic networking with peers, the scholarly community and the general public;
- Contribute to the formation and implementation of development policies at the local, national, regional and global level; and
- Have an ethical personality, embody a culture of leadership, and possess highly professional traits.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the study, graduates of PhD (Ethnic Studies) programme should be able to:
- Master and apply theories, principles and processes of ethnic studies, while analyzing critically in-depth accounts of inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches;
- Master technical skills and systematic information management related to ethnic studies;
- Contribute an innovative and responsible manner of management, able to handle tasks and make decisions in a team;
- Self-confident, ability to discourse, fluent in communicating orally and in writing, proactive in building academic networks;
- Competitive in local and global markets and strives to demonstrate a level of professionalism based on the values of integrity and ethnical behavior; and
- Skilled in encouraging, leading and supervising members of a community to be united, integrated and harmonious by upholding the principles of ethnic diversity.
Duration of Study:
Full time: six (6) to twelve (12) semesters
Part time: eight (8) to fourteen (14) semesters
Mode of Study:
Research mode only
Programme Requirements
- Register and pass the pre-requisite course(s) including the Malay language course for foreign students (if applicable)
- Register and pass eight (8) credit hours for the following courses:
- Present and defend studentβs presentation of research proposal, progress report and final draft at the KITA Postgraduatesβ Colloquium.
Graduation Requirements
- Fulfillment of credit hours
- Having passed the thesis and oral examination
- Two (2) academic publications
- Other requirements that are stipulated by the University.
Evaluation of Research Progress
Studentsβ progress is assessed continuously throughout the duration of the programme by the Main Supervisor or the Chairperson of the Supervision Committee in a confidential report on the progress of candidates that is submitted to the KITA Postgraduate Committee every semester. The Candidate Progress Report is to be filled by the supervisors online at the Student Information System (SMPWEB) between Week 17 to Week 19.
Students can be given the status of βFailed and Terminatedβ if they have obtained the following progress report:
- βwith a Reminderβ for four (4) times throughout the study period; OR
- βwith a Warningβ for two (2) times throughout the study period; OR
- a combination of two (2) βwith a Reminderβ and one (1) βwith a Warningβ throughoutthe study period; OR
- βFailed and Terminatedβ in any of the semesters.
Enrolment Requirements
1. Minimum Criteria
- Masterβs degree in a related field, with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.00 from any universities or higher learning institutions that are recognized by UKM; OR
- Any other degree equivalent to a masterβs degree that is recognized by UKM, OR
- Candidates who are currently enrolled in a full-time Master in Ethnic Studies in University and are recommended by the KITA Postgraduate Studies Committee to convert the status to PhD program with the approval of the Director of the Institute.
2. Malay Language
International candidates must enroll in and pass the Malay language course. Exemption can be offered to candidates who have enrolled and passed the Malay language course offered by other bodies that are recognized by the Senate. In certain cases, the Senate can offer exemption from the Malay language requirement as stated in the 2015 UKM Rules and Regulations (Postgraduate Studies).
3. English Language
- Non-Malaysian candidates must fulfill the minimum English language requirement as follows:
- a minimum score of 550 for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); OR
- a Band 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- International candidates who write their theses in the Malay language may be exempted from the IELTS or TOEFL requirement by undertaking the English Language Proficiency Test (Ujian Kecekapan Bahasa Inggeris, UKBI) as replacement.Β Students who fail the required level stipulated in the program must enroll and pass the English Language Proficiency Module (Modul Kemahiran Bahasa Inggeris, MKBI)
- The Institute may give an exemption for English language requirement to international candidate whose country of origin uses English language as its official language or who possesses academic qualification from any higher institution of learning that uses English language as its official medium of communication.
