Educational Objectives
The objective of Master in Ethnic Studies programme is to produce graduates who:
- Master and interpret knowledge from the field of ethnic studies;
- Relate and analyze problems in ethnic studies with up-to-date conceptual and theoretical frameworks;
- Master the analytical skills and methodologies of social sciences to synthesize problems related to ethnicity;
- Contribute knowledge and expertise in the formation and implementation of developmental policies at the local, national, regional and global level;
- Have an ethical personality, embody a culture of leadership, and possesses highly professional traits.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the study, graduates of Master in Ethnic Studies programme should be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced or progressive knowledge from an undergraduate level and develop or apply ideas mainly in the context of ethnic studies research;
- Use knowledge to solve problems related to the field of ethnic studies in new situations and multidisciplinary contexts;
- Integrate knowledge and manage complex matters in research;
- Make assessments and decisions in circumstances with limited information, considering relevant social and ethical responsibilities while conducting research;
- Communicate conclusions, knowledge and rationale to experts and non-experts in ethnic studies clearly; and
- Master learning skills to progress with a high degree of autonomy.
Duration of Study:
Full time: two (2) to six (6) semesters
Part time: four (4) to eight (8) semesters
Mode of Study:
Research mode only
Programme Requirements
- Register and pass the pre-requisite course(s) including the Malay language course for foreign students (if applicable)
- Register and pass six (6) credit hours for the following courses:
- Present and defend studentβs presentation of research proposal, progress report and final draft at the KITA Postgraduatesβ Colloquium.
Graduation Requirements
- Fulfillment of credit hours
- Having passed the thesis and oral examination
- One (1) academic publication
- Other requirements that are stipulated by the University.
Evaluation of Research Progress
Studentsβ progress is assessed continuously throughout the duration of the programme by the Main Supervisor or the Chairperson of the Supervision Committee in a confidential report on the progress of candidates that is submitted to the KITA Postgraduate Committee every semester. The Candidate Progress Report is to be filled by the supervisors online at the Student Information System (SMPWEB) between Week 17 to Week 19.
Students can be given the status of βFailed and Terminatedβ if they have obtained the following progress report:
- βwith a Reminderβ for four (4) times throughout the study period; OR
- βwith a Warningβ for two (2) times throughout the study period; OR
- a combination of two (2) βwith a Reminderβ and one (1) βwith a Warningβ throughoutthe study period; OR
- βFailed and Terminatedβ in any of the semesters.
Enrolment Requirements
1. Minimum Criteria
- Bachelorβs degree in a related field, with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.00 from any universities or higher learning institutions that are recognized by UKM; OR
- Bachelorβs degree in a related field, with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.75 from any universities or higher learning institutions that are recognized by UKM and with a minimum of one (1) year of working experience; OR
- Bachelorβs degree in a related field, with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.50 from any universities and higher learning institutions that are recognized by UKM and with a minimum five (5) years of working experience
2. Malay Language
International candidates must enroll in and pass the Malay language course. Exemption can be offered to candidates who have enrolled and passed the Malay language course offered by other bodies that are recognized by the Senate. In certain cases, the Senate can offer exemption from the Malay language requirement as stated in the 2015 UKM Rules and Regulations (Postgraduate Studies).
3. English Language
- Non-Malaysian candidates must fulfill the minimum English language requirement as follows:
- a minimum score of 550 for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); OR
- a Band 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- International candidates who write their theses in the Malay language may be exempted from the IELTS or TOEFL requirement by undertaking the English Language Proficiency Test (Ujian Kecekapan Bahasa Inggeris, UKBI) as replacement.Β Students who fail the required level stipulated in the program must enroll and pass the English Language Proficiency Module (Modul Kemahiran Bahasa Inggeris, MKBI)
- The Institute may give an exemption for English language requirement to international candidate whose country of origin uses English language as its official language or who possesses academic qualification from any higher institution of learning that uses English language as its official medium of communication.
