Developing Instructional Module of an Integrated Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) Curriculum for Lower Secondary School

Grant Category, Year:  Research Grant, 2019

Abstract

Malaysia’s palm oil industry is facing unremitting attack from the European Union (EU). Responding reactively towards the attack, Malaysia aims to increase the awareness among Malaysians through various means. One of Malaysia’s effort is the Edupalm programme. However, being a volunteering educational programme which is at risk of being ineffective (e.g. Young & LaFollette, 2009; Ahmad, Sritharan, & Mohamad Nasir, 2015; Ali, Endut & Embong, 2017), Edupalm is less likely to attract students’ and public’s attention in understanding issues revolving palm oil. Thus, this project aims to develop an instructional module of an integrated sustainable palm oil (ISPO) curriculum for lower secondary school students. A survey research design will be employed to gather the baseline data of lower secondary students’ knowledge and perception on palm oil. n=1000 lower secondary school students around Kajang and Bangi will be randomly selected. Next, this project will adopt ADDIE instructional design framework to develop the instructional module. Document analysis approach will be employed to determine palm oil elements in national school curriculum which further add value to existing practice. Then, Fuzzy-Delphi approach will be used to gather stakeholders’ suggestions on the content for ISPO curriculum. To assess the impact of the module on students’ knowledge and perception on palm oil, a non-equivalent control group design with pre-test and post-test will be employed. n=80 form 2 secondary school students from one selected school in Kajang will be involved. These respondents will be divided into two (2) classrooms where one class comprising of 40 students will be the control group and the other class will be the treatment group. Pre-test and post-test data will be analysed using ANCOVA to determine the impact of the instructional module. This project will produce an instructional module of ISPO which has the potential to be integrated in national school curriculum.
