A Discussion on POPs Contamination at Cameron Highland with CropLife International.
A discussion between UKM researchers and representatives from Malaysia CropLife and Public Health Association (MCPA) was held on 19 January 2013 at LESTARI Meeting Room. The main purpose of that discussion was to exchange views and information regarding Good Agriculture Practice (GAP) related to pesticides management. The meeting was attended by MCPA representatives, namely Mr D’Arcy Quinn, Director of Anti-Counterfeiting, CropLife International; Mr Chooi Lam Khong, Executive Director, MCPA; Ms Marie Goh Chooi Fong, Manager, Communication, MCPA, as well as UKM researchers including Prof. Dr. Mazlin Mokhtar, Prof Dato Dr. Ismail Sahid, Prof. Dr. Md. Pauzi Abdullah.
Manuscript Writing Workshop of IWRM Group
On 21st January 2013 LESTARI through the Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) group had organized a workshop on manuscript writing to further strengthen thewriting and publication skills of the group numbers and university's staff.
Kursus Pemantapan Aset LESTARI & Keselamatan dan Kesihatan Pekerjaan
LESTARI with the contribution of UKM’s Bursary and Office of Occupational Safety and Health had organized a training course on assets management and occupational safety to further strengthen the establishment of new laboratory and facilities especially in Langkawi Research Centre (PPL). The training was conducted on 31st January to 3rd February 2013 in Langkawi.
Sustainability Science Course (ZIXX6012) Workshop
On 1st to 3rd February 2013, academics and staff of LESTARI gathered in a workshop to consolidate and strengthen the Sustainability Science Course, which are offered by LESTARI to postgraduates. The workshop was held in Port Dickson and intense discussions were conducted to further improve the course to meet its objectives.
Asian Core Programme Group 3 Workshop on Environmental Risk Assessment and Management
The Asian Core Programme Group 3 Workshop on Environmental Risk Assessment and Management was held recently in Langkawi Research Centre (PPL), UKM, from 21 to 24 February 2013. The leaders for ACP Group 3 under the JSPS Asian Core Programme, collaboration between the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), Malaysia, are Professor Dr. Mazlin bin Mokhtar and Professor Dr. Minoru Yoneda. This workshop had successfully gathered a total number of 24 delegates comprising of 13 Japanese and 11 Malaysian researchers from the Kyoto University (KU), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
A Visit by Sabah Foundation Group to PPL
On 4th of March 2013, PPL received a visit from Group Manager of Conservation and Environmental Management Division (under Yayasan Sabah Group), Dr. Waidi Sinun and his team. The aim of this short visit is to see the research facilities that PPL offers and to know research progress that PPL have done so far. Dr. Waidi was very impressed with PPL infrastructures and aiming to adopt it at Imbak Field Centre soon.
Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) Open Days 2013
Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) and LESTARI had successfully organised ‘Hari Terbuka PPL 2013’ from 17-21 March 2013, held at the new PPL’s complex. The overall objectives of the 5-day event were to promote PPL’s research agenda and activities; disseminate information on research output to the local authority and community; and encourage further collaboration between UKM and relevant stakeholders at Langkawi in spearheading research on regional sustainable development. Various research activities under the theme of ‘Menyemarakkan Penyelidikan untuk Pembangunan Lestari’ were conducted including several briefing sessions on UKM, PPL and Langkawi Geopark; PPL’s complex and laboratory facilities tour; talk on ‘Langkawi Geopark Management Plan’; and roundtable dialogue sessions with different target groups.
Langkawi Geopark Exibition at Underwater World Langkawi
PPL participated in Langkawi Geopark Exhibition organized by Underwater World Langkawi on 20th to 24th March 2013 in conjunction with Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA). The objective of this exhibition was to expose on the beauty and uniqueness of Langkawi and Langkawi Geopark.
A Discussion with Prof. Park Sum Low (UKM-YSD Chair in Climate Change)
A discussion between LESTARI’s researchers and Prof. Park Sum Low, the UKM-YSD Chair, on Climate Change was held on 29th March 2013 at LESTARI Meeting Room. The objective of the discussion was to exchange views on the issues of climate change and potential collaboration between both parties. The meeting was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar and attended by LESTARI research fellows.
LESTARI Executive Workshop: Knowledge Transfer for Implementing the Green Economy in Malaysia and South East Asia
The second cycle of LESTARI Executive Workshop with the theme of Knowledge Transfer for Implementing the Green Economy in Malaysia and South East Asia had conducted on 2nd to 3rd April 2013 in Langkawi. The workshop becomes a platform for participants to share information on the subject from highly respected speakers including the like of Prof. Roderick Lawrence and others.
International Workshop on Sustainability Science: A Science Based Approach to Realize the Future We Want for All
The International Workshop on Sustainability Science “A Science Based Approach to Realize the Future We Want for All”, held at Istana Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on 4 – 5 April 2013, was successfully conducted. The International Workshop was co-organised by UNESCO and LESTARI, UKM in collaboration with JFIT and ISTIC, and was supported by HTCKL, UNESCO-IHP Malaysia, KPT, MNCU and MPN. The Workshop was attended by 100 participants from various international and national organisations and institutions, including representatives from the public and private sectors, NGOs, academic institutions and others. The event was graced with the presence of the Assistant Director Generals of UNESCO, Prof. Dr. Gretchin Kalonji (Natural Sciences) and Prof. Dr. Pilar Ãlvarez-Laso (Social and Human Sciences).
A Discussion with Prof. Dr. Nicholas Kathijotes (International Ocean Institute)
On 9th April 2013, LESTARI organised a discussion session with Prof. Dr. Nicholas Kathijotes, the director of International Ocean Institute (IOI) of Cyprus. The discussion was on potential research collaborations between LESTARI and International Ocean Institute and was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar, the Director of LESTARI. Prof. Dr. Nicholas Kathijotes also shared a presentation on “Blue-Economy- Environmental and Behavioural Aspects towards Sustainable Coastal Development” followed by intensive discussion on Blue Economy and issues on fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transportation, tourism, renewable energy and marine spatial planning.
A Discussion with Frangipani Resort, Langkawi
LESTARI and Frangipani, Langkawi had organized a discussion session on 18th April 2013 at LESTARI. This session was conducted as part of continuous cooperation between both parties in Langkawi, especially through PPL. Frangipani was represented by Me. Anthony Wong in this discussion on future collaboration potential in Langkawi.
A Discussion with Dr. Sutaro Yukawa
On 19th April 2013, LESTARI was happy to receive and welcome a visit by Dr. Sutaro Yakawa from The University of Shiga Prefecture, Japan for a discussion session with the academics and staffs of LESTARI as part of knowledge sharing and potential collaboration in future between the two universities.
Discussion with Lowering Emissions in Asia’s Forest Programme (LEAF)
On the 22nd April 2013, LESTARI organised a discussion with representatives from the Lowering Emissions in Asia’s Forest Programme (LEAF) which is a programe funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The program’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of target countries to achieve meaningful and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from the forestry-land use sector, thus allowing these countries to benefit from the emerging international REDD+ framework. LEAF was represented by Ms. Chi Pham and Ms. Mawaddah Azizan. The discussion was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar, the Director of LESTARI and attended by interested researchers on the potential collaboration through learning modules being developed by LEAF.
The Sustainable School- Environment Award Ceremony
The ceremony for Sekolah Lestari Award Ceremony was held on 23 April 2013 in Penang. The ceremony was officiated by Dato’ Sri Zoal Azha Yusof (NRE) and the award was won by SK Bandar Pusat, Jengka, Pahang and SMK Dato’ Onn, Pulau Pinang with multiple schools receiving special awards and recognitions on their efforts for sustainability.
