Round Table Dialogue with Campus Community on UKM Water Resources Management
A round table dialogue on campus water resources management was conducted by LESTARI on the 15th October 2012 at the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (FKAB). This dialogue was aimed to engage the campus community in promoting better water resources management within UKM and surrounding area.
Meeting on Asian Core Programme (Group 3)
On 17th October 2012, a meeting on Asian Core Programme was held in LESTARI. The participants of the meeting were mainly members of Group 3 (Environmental Risk Assessment) of JSPS Asian Core Programme. In this meeting we were honored to have LESTARI’s Adjunct Professor, Prof. Dr. Peter J. Peterson to share ideas and views relating to the programme conducted between the government of Japan and Malaysia.
Stakeholder Consultation Forum on Stockholm Convention Ratification
In engaging the issues of ratification of Stockholm Convention, LESTARI had organized a Stakeholder Consultation Forum on 18th October 2012 at the Bangi Equatorial Hotel . The objectives of this workshop was to identify options in better facilitate efforts towards ratification of the Stockholm convention that was signed on 16 may 2002 and to frame a roadmap for action towards ratification of the Stockholm Convention.
MyNICHE 8
On the 18th October 2012 the 8th edition round table dialogue of MyNICHE was carried out. The dialogue which, was officiated by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar discussed issues related on current trend and initiatives in chemical management, nanotechnology development, Chemical Safety Database and SAICM QSPTF.
National Geopark Implementation Commitee Meeting
The official meeting of National geopark Implementation committee (Jawatankuasa Pelaksana Geopark Kebangsaan) was conducted on the 1st November 2012 after being indorsed by Natural Resource and Environment Ministry on the 24 September 2012. The committee is headed by Prof. Emeritus Dr. Ibrahim Komoo with secretariat base at LESTARI, is made up of experts from various aspect of geopark. The committee is set up to be a technical support for existing National Geopark Committee in aspires and mover of creating more national geopark throughout the nation
Intellectual Discussion Session with Prof. Dr. Pak Sum Low, chair of IKLIM UKM- sime Darby Foundation
LESTARI had an honour to organise a brief intellectual discussion session with the chair of IKLIM UKM- sime Darby Foundation, Prof. Dr. Pak Sum Low on 30th October 2012 in LESTARI. The discussion was participated by members of LESTARI and common issues of interest between the both parties are discussed.
“Langkawi Educational Tour” Malaysian-German Mobility Programme
LESTARI had successfully conducted the Langkawi Educational Tour on 9th-13th November 2012, held in Langkawi Island, Kedah. The tour was organized in collaboration with the PTS 2012-002 Project by Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment, Institute for Environment and Development (LESTARI) and UKM International Office at UDE. Almost 20 students from various countries (Malaysia, German, Iran, Arab Saudi and Indonesia) were participated in this tour. The participants were exposed to Langkawi natural heritage and the sustainable management of it tropical resources through Langkawi Educational Tour modules. The modules is mixed between lectures and field visit to the selected sites representing the Langkawi natural and cultural heritage.
2012 Postgraduates Colloquium
The annual LESTARI’s Postgraduates Colloquium continues and this time it was conducted at Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) on 10th to 13th November 2012. This colloquium is a platform for postgraduates student to share and discuss their research progress among colleague of LESTARI.
Talk by Prof. Dr. Patrick McKeever
LESTARI through collaboration effort by several research groups in Sustainable Regional Development has organized a talk by Prof. Dr. Patrick McKeever (Chief of Section of the Global Earth Observation and Secretary to the IGCP UNESCO) on 22 November 2012 in Puri Pujangga, UKM. The talk entitle “Geopark, World Heritage and Biosphere Reserves: A comparison” was aimed to give better perspective to researcher on the purpose and scope of conservation and protection effort by UNESCO.
Mini Expedition of Pulau Langgun
A mini expedition in Pulau Langgun, Langkawi was conducted by Langkawi Research Centre (PPL) and led by Prof. Emeritus Dr. Abdul Latiff Mohamed from 26th to 30th November 2012. This expedition is slightly differing from the integrated natural and cultural PPL expedition series as it has a specific focus area with special scientific interest. More than 30 researches were participated in this mini expedition covering almost all the natural resources aspect.
Seminar Kampus Lestari UKM 2020 & Bengkel Pejabat Kelestarian UKM
On 22nd to 23th November 2012, a seminar on Sustainable Campus and Sustainable Office UKM was carried out at Equatorial Hotel Bangi. The event was officiated and addressed by Prof. Tan Sri Dato' Wira Dr. Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan Shahabudin, Vice Chancellor of UKM. Thirty papers were presented by participants in various areas working towards sustainable campus.
Exhibition at the Malaysia Water Resources Management (MyWRM) Forum 2012
In conjunction with the Malaysia Water Resources Management (MyWRM) Forum 2012, LESTARI was invited and participated as an exhibitor. . The event was organized by Malaysian Water Partnership (MyWP) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia on 26 -27 November 2012 in Putrajaya.
Learning for Change Workshop: Education for Sustainable Development in Malaysia
The collaboration of LESTARI with the Swedish International Centre of Education for Sustainable Development (SWEDESD) and Global Action Plan (GAP) had organized the Learning for Change Workshop: Education for Sustainable Development in Malaysia from 3th to 7th December 2012. More than 60 participants turn up to the workshop and exposed to the methods and approaches in promoting education for sustainable development under the supervision of expert from SWEDESD.
Sustainable Campus Convention of Higher Education Institutions 2012 (KKL2012)
LESTARI with the Ibu Zain International Student House (iZISH) UKM are among organisations which are organising KKL 2012 on 8-9 December 2012. The conference of KKL 2012 was held at Bilik Senat, UKM Chancelory Building and officiated by Datin Paduka Dr. Halimaton Saadiah Hashim, Head of UKM Sustainable Campus Group. KKL 2012 is aming to raise the awareness of preserving environment among public university students as well as sharing information on sustainable campus initiatives conducted by all representatives from various public universities in Malaysia. During KKL 2012, Ibu Zain International Student House (iZISH) of UKM has won the Best Sustainability Practices competing with other 10 representatives of public university.
Annual Workshop of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Research Group 2012
IWRM Research Group, LESTARI had organized an Annually Workshop of Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) Research Group 2012 on 18th – 20th December 2012, held in Bukit Tinggi, Pahang. The workshop was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar, the Chair of Regional Sustainable Development Niche (PLW) and joined by members in addressing the plans and needs of the research group for the future. Various matters pertaining to the IWRM research group had been discussed and shared for the benefits of all.
LESTARI’s Workshop on Peer-reviewed Journal Writing Strategies
On 21-22 December 2012, LESTARI’s Senior Fellow, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saiful Arif Abdullah had led a workshop on publications writing and shared an informative talk entitled “Strategies for Writing and Publishing in Peer-Reviewed Journal” for LESTARIANs embarking as well as strengthening their publication capacity.
Strategic Planning Workshop on Monitoring & Management of Chemicals Research Group (CMRG) and Manuscript Writing Workshop Chemicals Management Research Group (CMRG)
The Chemical Management Research Group (CMRG) had organized a workshop on monitoring and strategic planning of the group on 26-28 December 2012 in IOI Palm Garden, Putrajaya. The event was officiated by Prof. Dr. Mazlin Bin Mokhtar, the Director of LESTARI and Head of CMRG and participated by members of the research group. The workshop was later followed by a workshop for the publication writing of manuscript relating to the works of the group.
UKM’s Eco-Volunteers Strengthening Workshop 2012
The Eco-Volunteer Club of UKM had begin their stride with the workshop organized on 28 – 30 December with the aim strengthening the club and activities conducted. The workshop was participated by more than 30 volunteers from UKM and held in Sungai Menyala Forest Reserve in Port Dickson. Along the workshop, the Eco-Volunteers had also participated in Eco Beach Cleaning with Corus Hotel Port Dickson.
