International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystem
UNESCO at their 38th General Conference in Paris on 6th of November 2015 has proclaimed 26th of July as the International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystem. To commemorate and in conjunction with the inaugural global celebration this year, Dr. A. Aldrie Amir has accepted the invitation by the Institute of Sustainable Halophyte Utilization (ISHU) of the University of Karachi (UoK), Pakistan to deliver a lecture entitled ‘Introduction to Tropical Mangrove Ecosystem’ on the 26th of July 2016. Thirty faculty members including Dr. Salman Gulzar and Dr. Irfan Aziz as well as graduate students from ISHU and UoK participated in the lecture. The lecture was followed by a discussion that has sparked some interesting points and opportunities for a collaborative mangrove research work between Pakistan and Malaysia. This event was hoped to increase the understanding and awareness on the importance of mangroves and the systematic roles, functions, benefits and values that they play and provide.
