INTRODUCTION

Malaysian International Seminar on Antarctica (MISA) is a series of biennial events which gathers researchers from different countries to share findings and experiences in polar research and also provides the platform for our scientists to strengthen existing and forge new collaborations. MISA also provides opportunities for local researchers and students who are interested in pursuing their careers in polar sciences, especially global sciences.

History of the Malaysian International Seminar on Antarctica (MISA)

The first MISA was held in 2002 by the National Antarctic Research Center (NARC) with the cooperation of a local university as the host. Since 2013, the Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan (YPASM) together with NARC has successfully organized nine MISA with different themes and local universities as hosts.

From then on, the selected papers from MISA have been published in a special edition of Journal of Polar Sciences by The National Institute of Polar Research, Japan (NIPR) and Journal of Advances in Polar Sciences by Polar Research Institute of China (PRIC). Fifteen papers from MISA7 were published in 2018 under NIPR and 7 papers from MISA8 were published in 2021 under PRIC.

This international seminar provides a networking platform for Malaysian scientists to strengthen the existing collaboration and forge new cooperation among scientists. MISA also provides opportunities for local researchers and students who are interested in pursuing their careers in polar sciences, especially global science.

The 10th Malaysian International Seminar on Antarctica (MISA10) with the theme ‘Polar Research for Sustainability & Planetary Health’ is jointly organised by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), YPASM, NARC and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES).

We cordially invite you to participate in MISA10, and together to have fruitful conversations, build networks of cooperation, and propel polar research to new heights. MISA10 promises to be a memorable experience for all participants to be part of a collective effort to support global sustainability and planetary health.
