Workshop 1: Advancing Environmental Resilience: Malaysia’s Role in Polar Research and Sustainability

Overview:
The workshop will serve as an extension of the MISA conference, focusing on the practical aspects of polar research and its implications for achieving sustainability goals and planetary health. The workshop sessions will be designed to foster knowledge exchange, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and identify actionable solutions to address pressing environmental challenges in polar regions.

Objectives:

  1. To facilitate knowledge sharing among participants from local and international on recent advancements in polar research for sustainability and planetary health.
  2. To identify opportunities and challenges for local researchers in conducting research in extreme polar environments.
  3. To foster collaborations between researchers, policymakers, industry professionals, and NGOs to promote sustainable practices and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
  4. To encourage the incorporation of polar research findings into global efforts towards planetary health and environmental protection.

Workshop 2: Exploring Polar Microbiome

Overview:
This workshop aims to bring together researchers, students, and other professionals interested in studying the microbial communities that inhabit polar regions. The workshop typically includes presentations on recent research findings, discussions on current challenges and opportunities in the field, and networking opportunities for attendees.

Objectives:

  1. To advance the understanding of biodiversity, ecology and biogeography of polar microbes.
  2. To identify the role of microbes in polar ecosystems and how changing environments affect the microbes.

Workshop 3: SCAR- Tropic Antarctic Teleconnections (TATE) Workshop: Linking Poles to The Tropic

Overview:
The Earth’s tropical and polar regions are interconnected, exchanging heat, moisture, and momentum, influencing global climate dynamics. Recent decades have seen significant climate changes in the Arctic and Antarctic, with the Arctic experiencing rapid temperature increases and sea ice retreat, known as Arctic Amplification. These changes in the polar regions have widespread effects on climate patterns in mid-latitudes. In collaboration with the Malaysian International Seminar On Antarctica (MISA10), the Tropical Antarctic Teleconnections (TATE) action group, affiliated with the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), is organizing an international symposium titled “Interconnected Climate Systems: Exploring the Linkages Between Tropical, Polar and Mid-Latitude Regions”. This symposium is sponsored by TATE and is jointly organized by the National Antarctic Research Center, UM-FASS Climate Change Research Group at University Malaya, and the Sultan Mizan Antarctic Research Foundation (YPASM).

Objectives:

  1. Evaluate how teleconnections between the tropics/midlatitudes and polar regions affect the polar atmosphereocean- sea ice system.
  2. Improve our understanding of the pathways connecting the tropics and polar regions in both the troposphere and stratosphere through advancements in tropical polar teleconnection research.
  3. Investigate the wide-ranging effects of polar amplification and its connections to extreme weather events in middle/low latitudes.
  4. Establish scientific priorities, emphasizing key areas of focus, and develop policy summaries addressing tropical-polar teleconnections.
