COVID-19 Screening Services at UMBI Wellness Center (UWC)
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (CoVID-19) is spread by the virus called the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). To curb the spread of COVID-19, UKM Medical Molecular Biology Center (UMBI) has set up its COVID-19 Diagnostic Laboratory under a strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) and Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE). The lab has operated since 4th April 2020.
The screening test that is carried out at UMBI uses both methods of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR, using samples taken from both nasopharynx and throat) as well as Rapid Test Kit (RTK). Also, RT-PCR has been recognized as the best screening method for COVID-19 by World Health Organization (WHO). The SARS-CoV-2 screening protocols and procedures that being implemented at UMBI are in compliance with WHO’s standard, which targets the genes of RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), an envelope protein (E), and nucleocapsid protein (N) genes [1,2]. While for RTK, the test was being used to check the level of IgM and IgG antibodies. This is because studies have shown that anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgM and IgG antibody levels increased with the progression of the disease after being infected [3].
With capabilities and professionals, UMBI Wellness Center (UWC) would like to offer the paid screening service to the public and private agencies. This service was meant to increase the national screening capacity as well as to offer an affordable and accessible test to the public. The screening test for the public has started on 1st June 2020. For those who are interested, please contact us via 1 800 88 2007 or visit our website at https://www.ukm.my/umbi/uwc-covid-19-screening/ to book a screening appointment.
