BANGI, 23 September 2016 – Prof. Michael Goldsmith from Global Cybersecurity Capacity Centre, University of Oxford introduced the Cybersecurity Capacity Maturity Model (CMM) that was used in Oxford Martin School to The National University of Malaysia (UKM), recently.

Prof. Michael said that the model studies the maturity of cyber security capability through extensive evaluation of five dimensions and brought together international expertise in various sectors to contribute to the effectiveness of cyber security capacity.

“The five dimensions utilised are Cyber Security Policy and Strategy, Culture and Society, Education Training and Skill, Legislation and Regulation and Cybersecurity Standard and Technology Organization.

“The model was built with the cooperation of international stakeholders from all sectors such as experts from the academia to provide a comprehensive analysis of Cybersecurity Capacity,” he added.

He said the model was designed as an assessment tool and can be used as a benchmark to the system currently used.

“It can also help increase the level of cyber capabilities in all five dimensions using five maturity levels,” he said.

Meanwhile, Faculty of Information Science and Technology (FTSM) Dean, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Mohd Zin said, the biggest challenge for UKM in cyber security is to ensure that all national assets are protected.

“FTSM focuses on analysis studies pertaining to Cyber Security Mechanism, Digital Forensics, Cyber Laws and Cyber Ethics in Social Media Monitoring, Criminology, Politics and International Relations,” he said.

He added that cyber security protection of digital assets is focused on organizations in the government sector.
