BANGI, 6 December 2016 – A total of 50 students from 10 ASEAN countries assembled in Kuala Lumpur to participate in the CIMB Young Leaders Programme (CYAL) 2016.

The three-day programme, jointly organised by CIMB Foundation and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), focuses on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) practiced in ASEAN countries.

Director of University Community Transformation Centre (UCTC) UKM, Associate Prof. Datuk Dr. Rokiah Omar said UCTC received about 800 applicants but only 50 were selected to join the programme.

“All participants were brought to the Malaysian Meteorological Department and given a description of the climate of Malaysia and were exposed to DRR, specifically flood disaster.

“With the support from the Malaysia Civil Defence Department (JPAM) and the village community, the participants were exposed to the method of transfer of flood victims around the Sungai Tangkas Village, Bangi.

“We are also utilising this demonstration as a platform for the community in Bangi to be aware of what should be done, if they are faced with floods,” she explained.ukmnewsportal-eg
