BANGI, 29 December 2016 – Human are the dominant cause of global warming since the mid-20th century, said FRIM Forestry and Environment Division Director Dr.Samsudin Musa.

Dr Samsudin, was speaking at a lecture titled “Climate Change and Forestry: Input from Research and Development”, in UKM, recently.

Various concepts and ideas has been developed at the global level to combat the issue of greenhouse effects and this includes the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+).

REDD+ is a mechanism that has been under negotiation by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) since 2005, with the objective of mitigating climate change through reducing net emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions by enhancing forest management in developing countries.

REDD + provides an incentive to reduce GHG emissions from the forest, and offer an attractive rate to encourage participation by countries worldwide.

According to Dr.Samsudin, these ideas seem simple but in terms of execution and access to funds still much to be done to make it happen.

Malaysia through FRIM, emphasizes the importance of forests to help control biodiversity.

A variety of measures have been taken to conserve existing forests as well as restore forests that have been encroached upon illegally.

Samsudin Musa received his PhD in Botany in UKM (2011) and is among the members of the Malaysian delegation to the meeting of the UNFCCC.

He is also the main author of the publication Good Practice Guidance for Land Use Change and Forestry in 2003.
