BANGI, July 13, 2016 – The National University of Malaysia (UKM) recently distributed zakat totalling about RM3.7 million in 2015, recently.
Vice Chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Noor Azlan Ghazali said the distribution was managed based on the procedure stipulated by the Lembaga Zakat Selangor.
“About RM3.2 million was distributed in 2014. The difference in the total of distribution in 2014 and 2015 indicates the increase in the number of applicants, which is probably due to the current economic situation and the increasing cost of living.
“UKM always tries to help students who are underprivileged and any form of contribution from an outside organisation is highly appreciated,” he said at the handing over of Business Zakat of Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (BIMB).
Meanwhile, BIMB General Manager of Strategic Partnership , Datuk Wan Ismail Wan Yusoh said BIMB has allocated RM1 million to all public universities (PU) for Business Zakat purposes because almost all are Bank Islam clients.
“The distribution of zakat depends on the number of students at the university. Universities with a lot of students will receive more,” he explained.
The ceremony saw BIMB presenting their business zakat, totalling RM50,000, to UKM.
