Group – Marine Functional Genomics
INTRODUCTION
The Marine Functional Genomics Research Group studies marine macro-organisms with economic importance using the functional genomics approach. The research focuses on understanding selected biosynthetic pathways through comparative genomics approach by utilising available information in the protein and metabolic databases. Functional analysis of the genes involved in the process and their interactions with each other will shed light into the functional domains and regulatory mechanisms of some of these enzymes leading towards increased production and quality. The molecular biology approach will confirm the in silico determination of the biosynthetic pathway of interest.
The main objectives of the group are:
- To determine biosynthetic pathways of selected biomolecules in marine macro-organisms using comparative and functional genomics
- To study structure and function of genes and proteins for improvement of production and quality of selected macro-organisms and biomolecules
- To develop products for commercialisation
RESEARCH FOCUS
The research focuses on the following areas:
- Functional genomics of marine plants and animals
- Determination of biosynthetic pathway for selected biomolecules
- Development of new bioinformatics tools and databases
- Products for commercialization
