INTRODUCTION
Contamination from hydrocarbon and their derivatives and heavy metals always polluted the surrounding soil, and ground water. Treatment using biological tools such as bioremediation and phytoremediation are preferred because it is environmental friendly and cost effective. Bacteria and fungi isolated from the existing contaminated soil and wastewater consist of isolates which have been adapted to the pollutants therefore, the bacteria secrete enzymes that can degrade contaminants and used it as carbon sources for their metabolism. In our culture collections, several combinations of bacteria and fungi known as consortium have been established and they are capable of degrading certain types of hydrocarbons and heavy metals.
RESEARCH FOCUS
Remediation of heavy metals and hydrocarbon pollution in the environment:
- Bioremediation of heavy metals and hydrocarbon using bacteria, fungal and algae
- Phytoremediation of heavy metals and hydrocarbon using bacteria
- Development of systems for remediation
- Nanomaterials for energy and remediation
- Using nuclear techniques as a tool for heavy metals analysis
