Fuel Cell Process System Engineering, Materials and Bipolar Plates

INTRODUCTION

The Fuel Cell Process Systems Engineering, Engineering, Materials and Manufacturing of Bipolar Plates group focuses on designing, building and controlling stacks and the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). The researchers in this consist of engineers, physicists and chemist collaborating in the field of design, manufacture and control of PEM fuel cell stack. Other areas of interest including development of bipolar plate with thermoset and thermoplastic matrix material, Micro and nano-sized fillers, Manufacturing process of injection moulding and compression moulding processes and Functionalization of nano-sized fillers and its effect on the in-plane, through-plane electrical conductivity and properties of the composite moulded plate.

The achievements are:  LESTARI (1 kW): Portable Fuel Cell Power Generator; LESTARI’s Open Air Cathode Fuel Cell Stack;  SERINDIT II (200 W):  Fuel Cell Motorcycle; SERINDIT I (60 W): Fuel Cell Scooter; CHEM-E-CAR (10 W): Fuel Cell Demo Car; Prototype of Membrane Reactor to Produce Pure Hydrogen; and Prototype of Compact Pressure Swing Adsorption System for H2 Purification.

The group has secured research funding from the Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Some research articles in journal and proceedings have been published and members of the group delivered keynotes and plenary speeches at national and international conferences on renewable energy. Moreover, members of the group have won several international awards for their academic contribution.
