Cancer and Stem Cell

INTRODUCTION
The Cancer and Stem Cell cluster brings together researchers in basic, translational and applied research in a unified effort to conduct research in cancer and stem cells. Both areas are amongst the hottest research topics worldwide currently. The burden of cancer is increasing every year and in Malaysia more than 40,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. The challenges for the researchers include understanding the biology of cancers, discovering new biomarkers for early detection and prognostication of cancers, as well as finding new targets for therapy. Cancer research is indeed very competitive and billions of dollars are being pumped into research in countries like USA and also in Europe. Locally, the amount of funding is rather limited hence researchers should be focused and also address research questions which are somewhat local in context but where the answers could well be extended globally. This will require scientists to work closely with the clinicians to formulate the relevant research questions. Stem cell research is fast developing in Malaysia and UKM is one of the institutions with a good number of researchers in this area. The promise that stem cells could potentially provide us all with products to repair and regenerate damaged and diseased tissues and organs makes this an important research focus.
