BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE

BACKGROUND

Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery is a clinical department at the Faculty of Medicine UKM. It is located on the 9th Floor, Clinical Block, Tuanku Muhriz Chancellor’s Hospital. The Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck has grown year by year to now have 13 teaching staff including 4 lecturers with Professor status and 3 Associate Professor status. In addition, the Otorhinolaryngology Department is assisted by support staff consisting of an Administrative Assistant, two Science Officers, five Assistant Medical Science Officers and four Operating Assistants and a department secretary. The main task of the ORL Department is to provide teaching in the field of ORL to undergraduate, postgraduate students as well as sub-specialty training in the field of ORL such as laryngology, Head & Neck Surgery and neuro-otology and also conduct research in fields related to ORL. . The teaching process in the Otorhinolaryngology-Head & Neck department also involves teaching to undergraduate students from the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faulty of Allied Health Sciences. In addition, the department also provides specialized and comprehensive services to patients suffering from disorders and various diseases of the Ear, Nose, Throat and Head and Neck.

OBJECTIVE OF DEPARTMENT:

A) Patient care

  • Identify and respect the rights of patients to receive appropriate treatment to improve health by providing quality medical services and the use of treatment based on the most up-to-date and patient-oriented evidence.
  • To develop the department into a sub-field reference center in the care and treatment of ORL HNS in Malaysia and the surrounding region.

B) Teaching

  • Ensuring that teaching programs are appropriate for students covering theoretical and practical aspects in producing efficient/competitive and confident graduates.
  • Equip the ORL-HNS Department / Center with trained staff and sufficient equipment to become the ORL-HNS Training Center of choice for undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • To be the highest expert training center for trained ORL-HNS specialists by being a reference center in the country and regional areas.

C) Research

  • Conduct ongoing medical research activities to identify the latest treatment methods that can help improve the quality of patient health.
  • To instill awareness of the importance of innovation and research and to encourage the use of such knowledge in clinical practice.
  • Provide staff and physical base for basic and scientific research use.
  • Collaborate with Scientists, Clinical Specialists and Pharmaceutical Companies in all aspects, whether scientific or research related to the field of ORL HNS.
  • Actively encourage the publication of scientific papers in journals and conferences by graduates and lecturers with the help of illustration, multimedia and telemedicine experts.
