‘ENTERING THE NEW REALM OF INTERNATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION’

This program aims to discuss the impact that the current Covid-19 has had on international higher education and how universities are reacting to the situation. It follows through the plan of actions done by universities from different parts of the world in dealing with this global battle. The pandemic has changed what traditional teaching and learning environment used to be like and universities have to now accelerate their speed of transformation in adapting to these new challenges.
The panel of experts consist from scholars to practitioners from four different regions sharing their experiences in dealing with this unplanned necessary change. The discussion includes their strategy in embracing this new normal of education and the preparations involved in realizing this strategy.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
1. To provide participants with practical competencies and transferable skills in response to evolving higher education landscape.
2. To impart knowledge of the current trends and challenges of higher education globally.
3. To explore the strategic management and decision- making processes required in dealing with change and transformation.

Associate Prof. Dr. Abdul Latiff Ahmad currently holds the position Director of UKM Global - The International Relations Centre of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He is also a senior lecturer in the Centre of Research in Media and Communication, The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Politics and International Relations from The University of Kent, United Kingdom and his master’s degree from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam, Malaysia. In 2013, he obtained his PhD in Communication Studies from University of Queensland, Australia. He is currently the Malaysian Regional Vice President for the World Communication Association and also a Committee member for the National Strategic Communication Committee under the Higher Education Department of Ministry of Education. Dr. Ahmad is also a Fulbright Alumni.
Dr. Ahmad research interest include intercultural communication and internationalization. He has become principle researcher for various research relating to international student experience, cultural adaptation, identity and new media technology studies. He has become a speaker on matters of internationalization and intercultural communication in various events such as the International Workshop for International Office, SHARE student mobility and alumni workshop, APAIE, Universiti Administrators workshop and etc. He was also the Head of Modules on Effective Communication and Intercultural Communication Skills for the 29th SEA Games Volunteer Training Program in which he and his team trained over 10,000 volunteers. He has headed grants provided by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Ministry of Sports and Youth Malaysia, UKM and Central Bank Malaysia and has been co-supervisors for research involving Ministry of Women and Family Affairs, UEM, Pintar Foundation and CIMB Bank. |
Panelist
Professor Shingo Ashizawa is a professor at Toyo University in Tokyo. His research involves the comparative study of higher education management and quality analysis of the internationalization review process. Currently, Prof. Ashizawa is leading a joint-research project supported by the Japanese government agency, JSPS (Japan Society for Promotion of Science). The project is focusing on foreign credential evaluation and the comparative study of the National Qualification Framework.
His publications include “The impact of Tokyo Recognition Convention and Digital Student Portability” (2019) and “Student Mobility Trends and the Role of University Networks in the Asia Pacific Region -UMAP and Its New Initiatives-” (2019). He serves as an advisor for MEXT on the UNESCO’s Tokyo Recognition Convention Committee as well as referees for a number of JSPS funding related to internationalization of Japanese universities. Prof. Ashizawa is also serving as Deputy Secretary General for UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific) as of 2016. Prof. Ashizawa also organizes professional development programs for international educators such as SIIEJ (Summer Institute on International Education, Japan) as well as series of webinars and training sessions. As an outgrowth of these activities, he has organized several online communities for global education, including “RYUGAKU NO SUSUME Dot JP As a Fulbright scholarship grantee, Prof. Ashizawa studied at Harvard Graduate School of Education. His past professional experience includes positions at the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), Keio University, Osaka University, and Meiji University. |
Professor Adriana Rojas Martínez is a professional specialized on corporate affairs, communications, international strategy, negotiations, fundraising and international protocol. At Tecnológico de Monterrey (Monterrey Tech University), she has had several positions : Director of language Center; Manager of the CEMEX International Management Program (in collaboration with Stanford University and INSEAD); International Liaison Office Director at Boston (Harvard University); International Liaison Office Director at Yale University; Director of international protocol, honors programs and communications (Vice Presidency of International affairs). At present, she is the Director of Asia Pacific International Development.
Adriana has been promoting the collaboration with IVY League Universities, and the top Universities and Associations in Asia Pacific Countries through the projects development and an active participation in international forums and consortiums such as APRU, UAF, RIMAC, APAIE, APEC and ONE. During her administration, Tecnologico de Monterrey got, for the first time in America, the possibility to be a host University of top international events, such as the Association of Pacific Rim Universities Young Leaders forum, and the International Multi-hazards Symposium 2019 (With the United Nations Official Participation). Adriana has also academic experience in Mexico and abroad, teaching “Asian studies”, “Mexican and Latin American culture”, “Japanese language”, “International perspective”, “International negotiations”, ”Intercultural studies”, among others. She has been a guest researcher and speaker at USA, Japan, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and Mexico. |
Professor Dato’ Dr. Norazah Mohd. Nordin is a Professor in ICT in Education and the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Her research areas include Massive Online Open Courses (MOOC), Mobile Learning, ICT in Lifelong Learning, and Instructional Design in Online Learning and Futuristic Learning. Her current projects are the development of MOOCs, Learning Design in the 4th Industrial Revolution, the 4IR Cross-Creative Learning Innovation for Autism and Learning Spaces. She is an active member of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Lifelong Learning Hub, representing Malaysia for Research Network 1, ICT Culture. Presently, she is an Editorial Board Member of The Internet and Higher Education, an Elsevier Journal, a Q1 in the Web of Science. |
Atty. Lily Freida C. Macabangun-Milla is the Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Deputy Executive Director and concurrently the Director of the International Affairs Staff of the Commission on Higher Education. She graduated with a degree of Social Sciences major in Economics and Political Science from the University of the Philippines – Manila and finished her Bachelor of Laws in the University of the Philippines – Diliman. She completed programs on Intellectual Property, GATS WTO, internationalization of higher education and Adult Education Training Program. She is a lawyer by profession and a Career Executive Service Officer.
Presently, she is the Secretary-General of the University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific (UMAP) Philippines National Secretariat, the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Focal for higher education in the Philippines, among other representations. She has chaired several senior-level meetings within the region and spoken and presented on various topics on higher education in global platforms. She has also been recognized by the University of the Philippines College of Law for her distinguished achievements in public service. |
