Webinar: International Strategies on Student Mobility in the Era of a Global Pandemic

The future of international higher education has been a central issue during the era of global COVID-19 pandemic. This unprecedented health crisis has changed the landscape of prior perspectives on internalization and has caused substantial shifts in the physical international student mobility . Higher Education Institutions are required to find ways in adapting to the new norm in ensuring the continuity of these activities. During these travel restriction periods, virtual alternative programs are being actively designed to allow students from different parts of the world to participate in their area of interests.
In this webinar, we will be discussing on the challenges of student mobility in the era of global pandemic trends, international strategies and approaches for successful virtual mobility programs as well as ways of addressing the challenges in the short term and beyond.

Dr. Tanot Unjah is currently the Deputy Director of International Relations Centre and prior to this position she’s have been an active lecturer and field facilitator for one of the university mobility programs in the past 10 years. She also Research Fellow at Institute for Environment and Development preceding her PhD from the same institute for Conservation Geology. Her area of research includes nature conservation, geoheritage development and management (geotourism and geopark), sustainable utilization of non-renewable resources and geohazard. As the head of the geology and landscape heritage programme at Langkawi Research centre – one of the universities living lab, her research work is partnered with local authorities and have been translated and endorsed by Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark as well geopark development in the country.

Professor Ricky Wenkuei Chuang is a Professor at the Institute of Microelectronics and Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan. He is also the Associate Vice President for the Office of International Affairs and Director of International Relations Division. Before joining NCKU, Prof. Ricky has gained substantial experience working as a Postdoctoral researcher at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, USA. Among his research interests include:

Associate Prof. Dr. Abdul Latiff Ahmad currently holds the position Director of UKM Global - The International Relations Centre of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He is also a senior lecturer in the Centre of Research in Media and Communication, The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Politics and International Relations from The University of Kent, United Kingdom and his master’s degree from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam, Malaysia. In 2013, he obtained his PhD in Communication Studies from University of Queensland, Australia. He is currently the Malaysian Regional Vice President for the World Communication Association and also a Committee member for the National Strategic Communication Committee under the Higher Education Department of Ministry of Education. Dr. Ahmad is also a Fulbright Alumni.
Dr. Ahmad research interest include intercultural communication and internationalization. He has become principle researcher for various research relating to international student experience, cultural adaptation, identity and new media technology studies. He has become a speaker on matters of internationalization and intercultural communication in various events such as the International Workshop for International Office, SHARE student mobility and alumni workshop, APAIE, Universiti Administrators workshop and etc. He was also the Head of Modules on Effective Communication and Intercultural Communication Skills for the 29th SEA Games Volunteer Training Program in which he and his team trained over 10,000 volunteers. He has headed grants provided by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Ministry of Sports and Youth Malaysia, UKM and Central Bank Malaysia and has been co-supervisors for research involving Ministry of Women and Family Affairs, UEM, Pintar Foundation and CIMB Bank. |

Prior to taking up the position of national short-term mobility director in September 2015 at Tecnologico de Monterrey, Professor David Huerta Harris served for five years as Director of Tec de Monterrey´s International Liaison Office at Yale University, where he detonated several collaboration initiatives between his institution and Yale, also with other prestigious universities in the northeast like Columbia and Brown. Before this he served at the campus level, functioning as Academic Dean in charge of running 5 undergraduate programs at the Veracruz Campus of Tecnologico de Monterrey. Priory he was head of the Students Affairs and Alumni Relations office and Program Director of the Business and Administration program.
Prof. David Huerta holds a B.A. in Industrial and Systems Engineering and an M.A. with a concentration in Strategic Planning both by Tec de Monterrey, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate for the University of Hull U.K, with his thesis focusing on “The effects of education, self-efficacy and desirability on students’ entrepreneurial intentions and the moderating role of experience and cognitive style”. His research interest includes entrepreneurship and innovation, cognitive styles and pedagogy, higher education, internationalization, and leadership. While working in Veracruz he did consultant work with regional and local companies of the south of México. More recently he has worked closely with university consortiums and international associations to foster student learning through global mobility. He is currently in charge of developing and implementing a set of innovative programs for international students under the Tec 21 model, in collaboration with the National Schools of Tecnológico de Monterrey. |

Mr. Darren McDermott is currently the Team Leader of the European Union’s Support to Higher Education in the ASEAN Region (SHARE) Programme. SHARE is the EU’s flagship higher education programme with ASEAN, to strengthen regional cooperation, enhance quality, regional competitiveness, and internationalisation of ASEAN higher education, contributing to the development of an ASEAN Higher Education Space.
Mr. Darren has worked on numerous EU Commission and British Council funded education development and capacity building programmes with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States’ ministries of education and their higher education institutions. He is a member of the Asia-Europe Foundation's (ASEF) ARC8 Expert Group on Inclusive Mobility of People and Knowledge to prepare the Outlook Report 2030: Inclusive and Diverse Higher Education in Asia and Europe. Following education roles in Japan and Ireland and an MSc in Education & Training Management, Darren joined the School of Education Studies at Dublin City University as a lecturer and researcher on international education programmes. He subsequently conducted research on the internationalisation of education on a Japanese Government research scholarship at Waseda University, Tokyo. |
