PROGRAM SUMMARY
The postgraduate program at IKMAS emphasizes research within the social sciences with focus on various disciplines especially economics, sociology, political science, law and culture. The program is devoted to Malaysian and International Studies within the framework of inter-regionalism, connectivity and inclusive development. The thrust of the program advances the graduates’ understanding of historical and contemporary transformations, bearing in mind the interests of Malaysian society.
Our approach to Malaysian Studies is multidisciplinary, and the context is Malaysia in the globalising world and the processes as well as effects of its interaction with the outside world. Our graduates will understand the processes of social inequalities, for example economic differentiation and competition, as well as processes that impact class, ethic, gender, politics and identity.
International Studies, on the other hand, focuses on the multiple dimensions of globalization and occidentalism as they impact the international community and regions around the world. Graduates of IKMAS will understand societies, regions and states – taken as case studies – not only in the framework of new area studies, but also how these societies, regions and states are impacted by the various dimensions of globalisation. The responses of these societies and states to the phenomena and processes of globalisation are also studied, and a comparative approach is applied to understand inter-regionalism.
LIFE AT THE FACULTY
IKMAS is located at the heart of the university’s main campus about 35 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. A wide range of facilities are available on the campus grounds for both academic and extracurricular activities. IKMAS graduates also benefit from the institute’s active networking with international and local bodies that leads to the organization of multiple events and programs every year. The graduates’ involvement in the four levels of IKMAS Postgraduate Seminar during the duration of their study provides them the platform to present their research work, engage with peers and research fellows, and be involved in intellectual interactions and discourse. Academic counsel from the esteemed members of institute’s International Advisory Board, Adjunct Professors and Distinguished International Professors is an added bonus.
