Bachelor of Occupational Therapy with Honours

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Occupational Therapy is a healthcare profession that aims at improving, maintaining, and restoring independence and productivity in various areas of occupation amongst individuals who are affected by disability, injury, chronic illness or cognitive impairment. Occupational Therapy focuses on the concept of self-care, work/productivity, and play/leisure activities to promote participation and restore the roles of affected individuals as active contributing members in the society. The field of Occupational Therapy focuses on various disciplines such as paediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatrics, orthopaedics, and physical dysfunction. These disciplines equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to become competent occupational therapy practitioners who are able to assist individuals of all ages and conditions to achieve the best quality of life.

I Want To Apply

A person who wishes to apply for admission to the Doctorate programme shall possess the following qualification:

1. Masters Degree from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or

2. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s Degree or having other qualifications with experience recognised by the Senate; or

3. A candidate who is currently attending a full time a Master programme under paragraph 6(1) (a) in the University and is certified by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee/Centre for Graduate Management to convert his/her status to a Doctorate programme with the approval of Dean of the Faculty/Director of the Institute; or

4. Bachelor’s Degree with excellent results from the University or any higher learning institution recognised by the Senate; or

5. Other qualifications recognised by the Senate obtained through Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) or through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL); and

6. Fulfills other requirements prescribed by the programme (where applicable).

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

Life at Faculty

Faculty of Health Sciences, UKM is located in the middle of Kuala Lumpur city. The location is very strategic as it is near to public transport facilities, malls, and shops for students’ convenience. In addition, the faculty is well-equipped with various facilities such as library, teaching labs, computer labs, and lecture halls, public facilities such as prayer room, ATM machine, convenience store, pharmacy, cafe and canteen. Located in the middle of the campus, the Bookworm Cafe offers a comfortable environment for students to discuss and socialise with friends and lecturers while enjoying tastiest coffee. There are various students’ clubs available including the Club of Occupational Therapy Students (COTs) that offer extra-curricular activities. Students will enjoy a meaningful learning experience in the Kuala Lumpur Campus. Student accommodation is located near Taman Tasik Tititwangsa an urban recreational park spreading across an area of 95 hectares with 57 hectares of lake. Students will able relax or exercise at the park if they require a change of scenery. The program also has a tight-knit relationship with the alumni and industrial stakeholders to help mould the students to become a professional in their career pathway.
