SKAP6004 Social Research Methodology
Research on social, development and environment issues require reliable information from numerous sources as well as appropriate data gathering methods and analysis. The course enables students to write a research proposal, conduct research and interpret research findings. The course examines various topics such as (a) research dimension, theory and methodology; (b) qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, data management and data analysis, (c) research design, research proposal and presentation of research report, and (d) discipline-based research methods. Students will also be exposed to field research and data analysis using SPSS.
SKAP6013 Discourse on Social Thought
The present course will engage discussion on the various social theories put forward by Western and non-Western social thinkers in explaining the relationship between man, society and the universe as well as current philosophical, theoretical and methodological discourses. Topics to be discussed include the differences between revealed knowledge and the sciences; the role of philosophy in the development of social theories; and the redefinition of the relationships between social structure, human agencies and space within the paradigm of societal and environmental changes. These issues will be discussed from the Malaysian perspectives and contextuality, in relation to the emergence of postmodern theoretical discourses and their practical question.
SKAD6113 Planning and Sustainable Development
This course focuses on the philosophies, concept, dimensions and precesses involved in the planning and implementation of sustainable development. The global contexts of change to be discussed in various aspects of sustainable development, including economic competitiveness and sustainablity, civil society, urban and rural services accessibility of environmental sustainablitity and demoracy in development management. The course will also discus the variuos movements and challenges of sustainable development in the global era including information and technologies, transnational firms, and other global movement, based on several local and internatioal case studies.
SKAD6123 Philosophy and Development Theory
This course is concerned with the overall introduction of the meaning, process and problems of development with referring to the important debates in philosophy and develpoment theories. This course will discuss the history and analyze the evolution of development theories such as stage of growth theory, dependency theory, analysis of world systems and mode of production. This course will also look at the alternative approaches to theoretical analysis about development such as post-modern approach post-colonical, regulations flows, sustainable development and globalisation. The approaches will help the students to understand how the philosophy and theories explain the economic, social ad political phenomena of development in the third world countries.
SKAD6133 Development Management and Analysis
This course combines the technique of development analysis with the understanding of the public and private sector’s responsibility in managing development. Analysis procedures susch as social impact assessment, SWOT analysis and economic assessment method will be discussed besides identifying several problems in implementing and managing development such as decision-making process, human resource management and investment assessment.
SKAD6143 Development Advocacy
In the sustainble development context, a balance between eonomic importance, environmental conservation ad community well-being becomes the basis for planning, managing, implementing and monitoring development policies. These objectives would not be achieved without guaranteed participation, partnership and fair negotiation from all paties who are involved in development. Development advocacy functions as a channel to ensure the existence of pastnerships and consulting process. This course will introduce to students the concept, methods and strategies in development advocacy. In relation to this, this course will also offer hands-on experience of development advocacy, as an individual or development agency.
SKAD6153 Globalization and Development
This course discusses in depth the concepts of globalization and the main forces of globalization which influence development and change such as transnational companies (TNCs), technological change and the role of the government. Among the aspects being covered in this course are the characteristics of TNCs and its impact to development process, issues related to information and communication technologies (ICT), technology transfer and development of local technology, and government response especially in developing countries, with the main forces of globalization.
SKAD601C Master Thesis
This course is an academic exercise for student to conduct an independent research. However, students will be supervised by a supervisor to ensure the research fulfill the program’s requirement. The research covers several aspects, i.e., identifying research question, literature review, methodology, and empirical studies on developmental issues based on either primary or secondary data or both. At the end of the semester, the student is required to sit for the viva-voce session to examine the originality and knowledge of the research.

SKAD6213 Spatial Change and Development
This course discusses the changing trends in spatial development brought about by changing movements in development. These might be local or external as in the case of colonialization, internationalization and globalisation. In the globalisation era, the study of space is no longer limited to the traditional study of physical space, but has expanded to include functional space which might not be physically contiguous. New spatial concepts such as global cities, space of flow, cyber space, informational cities and space economy are among the concepts given special attention in the course.
SKAD6223 Governance and Development
Good governance is a pertinent characteristic to produce efficiency, stability and sustainability in development. The objective of this course is to assess the importance of governance in development and to discuss the important elements that good governance should possess. Focus is given to aspects such as how good governance is implemented in a holistic capacity irrespective of administrative hierarchies, sectors and physical boundries (urban-rural). Issues of governance in term of history, politic, economy and social are emphasized in this course. These are considered important factors and will have an impact on managing development. Factors related to governance will also be discussed in the global context, which includes the international economy, industrialization and urbanization in developing countries. This course attempts to shape a diagnostic framework in order to understand the issue and problems relating to governance and development, and how these issues are solved by referring to experiences of governance in developed and developing countries.
SKAD6233 Local Economic Development
The dynamics in the process of globalisation has varying effects on the nation’s economy and local economic conditions. Local economic development scrutinizes the vitality and sustainability of the development of local economic sectors, which is embedded in the confluence of political power and cultural forces. This course focuses on the understanding and usage of several ideas to lacal economic development. Some of the contemporary concepts related o the local economic development that will be discussed include waves of economic base, industrial districts, enterprise zone,enterpreneurial city, local governance, institutional thickness, local participation, social capital and cultural capital.
SKAD6243 Tourism Development
This course provides a theoretical abd practical understanding of tourism development. The course commences with a discussion on the prevailing ideas and theories of tourism studies from a multidisciplinary prespective, as well as the concept of toursim as a multi-dismensional activity. The second part of the course reinforces the students’ understanding of toursim as a singificant sector in a nation’s economic growth through discussions on sustainable tourism development. The third part of the course concerns itself with the practical side of toursim by examining issues concering sustainable tourism development. Among the issues to be discussed include tourism as an economic activity and consumption, effect of globalisation, cost-benefit of tourism development, carrying capacity of human and natural resourses, impact on social relations and culture, integration or marginalisation of local communities, security and safeguards, and issues of gender in tourism.

The course equips students with the necessary academic writing skills to write an academic essay. A student-centered approach is adopted to give students the required writing practice to improve their skills and writing ability. Students will learn to paraphrase, summarize, synthesize information, arrange and apply ideas and information and substantiate their writing with valid and relevant facts. At the end of the course, students should be able to carry out academic writing tasks and write a report effectively.
