SYNOPSIS

Writing and publishing research papers are important to reveal and share our experiences with scientific communities in the field, but they are challenging tasks. Good scientific papers should contain interesting, useful and innovative results and should be easy to understand. Quality of a paper reflects that of authors; without an in-depth knowledge and experiences, a scientist cannot write a good scientific paper. The first module of this talk is about a Publisher’s guide to writing and publishing scientific manuscripts (How to Get Published in a Research Journal) followed by the second module about author responsibilities and rights.

Dean Eastbury has over 30 years of experience in academic publishing. After 5 years as a desk editor at Pergamon Press he studied for a BSc in earth sciences at Oxford Brookes University followed by a further 5-year period in the Netherlands as a production editor and manager of VSP’s journals and books programme. In 1991 he joined Butterworth-Heinemann as publishing editor of engineering journals and in 1994 took a position at Elsevier as publishing editor (senior publishing editor in 1997) of the solid mechanics journals and books portfolio where in 2003 he published the major reference work Comprehensive Structural Integrity which won the 2004 Best Reference Award from the American Society for Engineering Education.  During that period he developed or started a number of conference series, including Wear of Materials, International Conference on Engineering Failure Analysis, and the International Conference on the Mechanics of Biomaterials and Tissues from which the Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials was launched in 2007.

In January 2009 he switched to chemical engineering as executive publisher for “minerals and separations” and in 2010 won Elsevier’s Best Publisher for Journal Development for the 2009 re-launch of the journal Desalination, which has seen its impact factor rise from 1.155 in 2008 to 3.756 in 2014.  In 2010 he took responsibility for the publication of the Institution of Chemical Engineers titles and in 2011, at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers annual conference, launched a new review title in Elsevier’s prestigious Current Opinion series: Current Opinion in Chemical Engineering.  In 2011 and 2012 he set up two new conference series: the International Conference on Ionic Liquids in Separation and Purification Technology and the International Conference on Desalination Using Membrane Technology and in May 2014 launched a new publication: Journal of Water Process Engineering. He is has recently been working with the Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute on the 2nd International Conference on Desalination and the Environment which was held in Doha in January 2016 as well as a new conference on sustainable water processing which will be held in Spain in September 2016.

Prof. Dato Ir. Dr. Abdul Wahab Mohammad is currently a Professor in Chemical Engineering with specialization in membrane and separation technology. He is also currently Co-Editor of a new Elsevier journal – Journal of Water Process Engineering. He has published more than 150 journal papers with citation exceeding 2500 and h-index of 25. He is also a Fellow of the Malaysia Academy of Science and Institution of Chemical Engineers Malaysia.
