“Let US take care of the FORMATTING, so that YOU can focus on WRITING!”
In some universities, LaTeX has been used extensively for teaching, research and publication as well as thesis supervision due to its superiority over the MS Office. With that in mind, the UKM LaTeX-LyX Research Group developed the LaTeX-based UKM thesis template to take away the daunting task of formatting theses from UKM postgraduate candidates. Imagine formatting a 250-page Word document to conform to a very rigid styling requirement. LaTeX holds the philosophy that the task of content writing and formatting should be separated, and that is why the research group uses it as the main tool for pursuing the slogan, “Let US take care of the FORMATTING, so that YOU can focus on WRITING!”. LaTeX however is definitely not for beginners. Users need to learn basic LaTeX coding (think of html tags such as <html>, <body>, <p>, <img src= “name.jpg”>) to write a document. Whether or not you have learned pure LaTeX coding, or have heard nightmare stories of others learning it, do not fret. That’s where the copyrighted UKM LaTeX-LyX Thesis Template comes in. The template runs on the LaTeX engine, hence utilising the power of LaTeX, but is used on a GUI-editor called LyX that works similar to MS Word. The current template caters to theses written in English and Bahasa Malaysia. So come to the public lecture to appreciate how we take care of the formatting, so that you can focus on writing!

Khairul Azman Aziz

DR. KHAIRUL AZMAN AZIZ is a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Economics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and holds a PhD from the University of Otago, New Zealand with teaching and research interest in accounting information systems. His first extensive use of LaTeX (a type setting system used to produce high quality documents) started with his PhD dissertation. He used a generic thesis template available in LyX (a GUI-based document processor utilising LaTeX) and tweaked it for his thesis manuscript to conform to University of Otago’s requirements. Albeit never attended a formal LaTeX course, he volunteered to join a group of researchers from his faculty that was developing a thesis template for use with LyX that followed Gaya UKM guidelines. Through self-learning and experience with his own thesis, he is now an active member assuming the role as the main technical expert in the development of the template and as co-trainer in related workshops.

Norlin Khalid

DR. NORLIN KHALID is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Management (FEP), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and holds a PhD from the University of Essex, United Kingdom with teaching and research interest in monetary economics. Having used LyX-LaTeX during her PhD thesis writing and experienced beauty of LyX-LaTeX herself, has motivated her to set up a group of researchers under a research grant project (since 2013) to develop a LyX-LaTeX thesis template that comply with Gaya UKM for the benefit of FEP’s students. With that in mind, her group has taken a step further by collaborating with the Graduate Centre of UKM to benefit all postgraduate candidates. She is a trainer and has conducted several LyX-LaTeX workshops to facilitate student in writing their thesis.
